Description
Galena pseudomorph after PyromorphiteWhen it comes to German classics, the iconic Pyromorphite specimens from Bad Ems are among the top of the list. These historic and signature specimens are known worldwide for their excellent size form and color. The majority of the specimens were mined in the mid 1800s and, while you can see them in old important museum collections, along with some of the best private collections in the world, very little material is available on the market today.
When it comes to German classics, the iconic Pyromorphite specimens from Bad Ems are among the top of the list. These historic and signature specimens are known worldwide for their excellent size form and color. The majority of the specimens were mined in the mid-1800s and, while you can see them in old important museum collections, along with some of the best private collections in the world, very little material is available on the market today. Occasionally, these beautiful Pyromorphite specimens were pseudomorphed by Galena, which is arguably more desirable for collectors, as very few specimens survived from years ago.
On this specimen, the original hexagonal form of the preexisting Pyromorphite crystals is perfectly preserved by the dark grey colored Galena which is now completely enveloping the surface of each crystal. There are a few contacted / exposed areas where the original Pyromorphite can be seen, revealing a soft golden-brown hue. The largest individual crystal measures about 6 mm. I love how the crystals formed into semi-"rosettes", which are slightly elevated above the matrix, giving the piece character and a three-dimensional appeal. You'd be hard-pressed to find another piece like this from Bad Ems these days, especially with such great pedigree/ provenance, as it is accompanied by historic old labels from noted New York City mineral dealer, Hugh Ford along with a wonderful old label (that is sadly split in half) from the famous Foote Mineral Company in Philadelphia.
