Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens (SELP18105G)

Overview: The Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS is a versatile zoom lens designed for Sony’s APS-C mirrorless cameras, offering a wide-to-telephoto zoom range suitable for a variety of shooting situations. With a constant f/4 aperture, power zoom capability, and Optical SteadyShot (OSS) stabilization, this lens is ideal for both photo and video applications, including vlogging, event shooting, and general-purpose photography. It also belongs to Sony’s G Lens series, which promises superior optical performance and image quality.

Key Features:

  • Wide Zoom Range: The 18-105mm focal length (equivalent to 27-157.5mm in 35mm format) covers a wide range of photography needs from wide-angle to telephoto. This makes it a versatile lens for landscapes, portraits, events, and everyday use.

  • Constant f/4 Aperture: The lens maintains a constant f/4 aperture throughout the entire zoom range, allowing consistent exposure settings while zooming. This feature is especially useful for video recording and shooting in variable lighting conditions.

  • Power Zoom (PZ): The built-in power zoom functionality provides smooth and quiet zooming, making it perfect for video work. The zoom control is responsive and allows for precise adjustments, ideal for capturing professional-grade zoom effects in videos. The zoom can be controlled using the zoom lever on the lens or from compatible Sony cameras.

  • Optical SteadyShot (OSS) Stabilization: Optical SteadyShot image stabilization compensates for camera shake, making it easier to shoot handheld, especially in low light or at slower shutter speeds. This feature is invaluable for both photographers and videographers who need steady shots without using a tripod.

  • High-Quality Optics (G Lens Series): As part of the Sony G Lens lineup, the SELP18105G offers excellent image quality with minimal distortion and aberration. The lens construction includes two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements and three aspherical elements, which work together to minimize chromatic aberrations and ensure sharpness and clarity across the frame.

  • Smooth Background Bokeh: Thanks to the 7-blade circular aperture, the lens produces beautiful background bokeh, making it ideal for portraiture and isolating subjects from their backgrounds.

  • Internal Zoom Mechanism: The lens features an internal zoom mechanism, meaning the length of the lens does not change while zooming. This not only maintains balance but also makes it more stable when used on gimbals and other supports, particularly useful for videographers.

  • AF Performance: The linear motor in the lens enables fast, precise, and quiet autofocus, which is essential for both stills and video, ensuring smooth focusing transitions.

One of the best middle grade books of 2018!
Format: Hardcover
FRONT DESK is loosely based on author Kelly Yang’s life experience, as explained in an author’s note at the end of the book. Her straightforward writing makes this book perfect for younger middle grade readers (Mia is 10). Yet Yang tackles difficult issues like interpersonal, systemic, and institutional racism. She writes so simply and honestly, it’s hard to imagine a young person walking away without understanding these powerful messages. FRONT DESK is infused with dark truths about America and still manages to be light, heartwarming, and fast-paced. Lovable Mia solves problems by using her writing skills—not her math skills as her mother wishes she would. She beats the system by using her words, often disguised as the words of adults, to point out injustices and find pathways to a better life for her family and friends. Mia’s and her parents’ find—actually, create—community at the Calavista Motel. They fight back when multiple systems conspire to make life impossible for Hank, an African American man who lives at the hotel. They devise a system to hide desperate Chinese immigrants in vacant rooms. This is deep social justice work, accompanied by anecdotes of Mia’s follies at the front desk and problems at school. The book ends on a hopeful note, with the Tangs’ community surrounding them to help them take the first step off the poverty rollercoaster. The solution they come up with has a chance at helping others get off, too. FRONT DESK shifts the narrative about the American experience, acknowledging that there are many American experiences. The pathway to the American Dream can take many forms, and Yang has described one that is heart wrenching, hopeful, and a lot of fun along the way.

This is my middle school daughter’s favorite book.
Format: Paperback
My daughter usually reads only graphic novels, but she started reading chapter books after this one. She loved it so much that she’s read it several times, and since it’s a series, we bought and read all the other books too. It’s a great book for middle school girls—easy to get into and very engaging.

Perfect Combo of Fun and Serious
Format: Kindle
This story was the perfect combination of humor and seriousness. I, even as an adult, remember some of those same feelings and the drama of junior high years. It made me take a look even at myself and ask what I look for in people? It made me ask myself if I need to reach out and apologize. But it also ales me want to do better. Step away from social media. When on social media, make sure I think about my comments and how they can be construed or make people feel. Help my nieces and nephews compliment actions and other such areas and not looks. To look deeper into a person. Well written. Lots of fun. And just what I needed in a book. Chad Morris and Shelly Brown do it again.
