Wichita Lineman: Searching in the Sun for the World's Greatest Unfinished SongDylan Jones' luminous excavation of Jimmy Webb's song 'Wichita Lineman' offers a portal into a defining moment of American cultural history. Dylan Jones' luminous excavation of Jimmy Webb's song 'Wichita Lineman' offers a portal into a defining moment of American cultural history. The sound of Wichita Lineman was the sound of ecstatic solitude - but then its hero was the quintessential loner. What a great metaphor he was: a man who needed a woman more than he actually wanted her. Here, deep in American Arcadia, was a man in deep existential crisis.
Written in 1968 by Jimmy Webb, "Wichita Lineman" is the first philosophical country song: a heartbreaking torch ballad still celebrated for its mercurial songwriting genius 50 years later. It was recorded by Glen Campbell in LA with a legendary group of musicians known as "the Wrecking Crew," and something about the song's enigmatic mood seemed to capture the tensions of America at a moment of unprecedented crisis. Fusing a dribble of bass, searing strings, tremolo guitar and Glen Campbell's plaintive vocals, Webb's paean to the American West describes a telephone lineman's longing for an absent lover who he hears 'singing in the wire' - and like all good love songs, it's an SOS from the heart.
Mixing close-listening, interviews and travelogue, Dylan Jones explores the legacy of a record that has entertained, perplexed and haunted millions for over half a century. What is it about this song that continues to fascinate and seduce listeners, and how did the parallel stories of Campbell and Webb - songwriters and recording artists from different ends of the spectrum - unfold in the decades following the song's success? Part biography, part work of musicological archaeology, The Wichita Lineman opens a window onto America in the late twentieth century through the prism of a song that has been covered by myriad artists in the intervening decades.

Content is better than the title!
Format: Paperback
The best quality of Heiser as a scholar/writer in my opinion is that he appreciates the academy but does not acquiesce to its influence. This is seen most in his correct interpretation of the identity of the sons of God in Gen 6 and the identity of Satan in Is 14 and Ez 28 etc. which were long abandoned and scorned by the academy. All 60 articles are well written with clarity and brevity!

Read all of his books, you won't be dissapointed.
Format: Paperback
I love Dr. Heiser books, but I wanted to step back from the spiritual realm and reconnect with scripture again. This book is light, easy to read, and like all his content, so eye opening. I am alway slapping myself in the forehead and wondering how I didn't know or notice things. "I Dare You Not to Bore Me With the Bible" is another of his books that I'm reading simultaneously. If you want to go deeper in Bible Study, this is the book. It's helped me forgive a lot of the Bible "hangups" I have that were very cultural or significant for reasons I missed. Get those 2 books (this and the one I mention above), and then when you're ready to really have your understanding of G-d and the Bible blown out of the water, move on to Unseen Realm, Reversing Hermon, Supernatural, and all of the others. If you desire to understand the Bible, and not just show up on Sunday, read everything by Dr. Michael Heiser, his website is a great resource too. So grateful for the work he does.

Excellent tool for gospel workers!
Format: Kindle
For those of us who want to contextualize the gospel in pagan contexts, Dr. Michael S. Heiser helps us get beyond our own cultural context to the ancient cultural context of the Bible itself. One could spend years and years researching the ancient contexts of the Bible, but for workers with families and careers other than Dr. Heiser's, the time needed would far exeed what is practical. Thankfully, there is a solution: Dr. Heiser has done a lot of the distilling needed to grasp the basic cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the Bible writers. After presenting the Unseen Realm, Reversing Hermon and I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible, he has done one better here in the Bible Unfiltered. Why do I say better? Well, I would say that as time has gone on, Dr. Heiser's ability to communicate complex topics for the average layman has improved markedly. Get this book, let it whet your appetite, and then please do get Unseen Realm and Reversing Hermon. They will help you to understand the Bible, contextualize the gospel, and offer an entrance to a fantastic intellectual and spiritual journey of a lifetime.
