This album collects the music from Odýsseia, an original performance of music, texts and images, which we presented on the stage of the Teatro Ristori in Verona in December 2019. This complex and multifaceted project involved us in the careful attention to every detail, from the music to the lyrics, from the set design to the acting. The aim of the show was to accompany the spectator along the journey of Ulysses, a mythical figure who deeply reflects the soul of contemporary man. A journey to discover distant and diverse cultures, but under the sign of hospitality and listening to the other. A journey home, along which Ulysses finds himself having to question his own identity, driven by the curiosity to deeply know himself and those he meets, almost forgetting where and what home truly is. Our Ensemble, since its inception, has been dedicated to studying, arranging and performing traditional music from the Mediterranean area. Odýsseia was born from the intertwining of this repertoire with the mythical tale of the Odyssey. This encounter between traditional music and Homeric epic allowed us to grasp, in backlight, the essential similarity that brings popular music closer to the ancient Greek poem: works that were both born from the vitality of extemporaneous composition, from improvisation, and then handed down through oral tradition, avoiding for a long time the rigidity of written form. Furthermore, both popular music and the ancient Homeric poem radically refuse to be attributed to a single artistic genius of romantic stamp, and make us rediscover the strength of collective creation, the potential of a common, not singular, song: a voice of the multitude. The album maintains the order of the songs and the scene breakdown of the show: Proem, The Lotus-Eaters, The Cyclops, Circe, The Underworld, The Sirens, Calypso. We also decided to include in this booklet some images and text fragments, allowing the listener to approach the show with imagination, just as it was originally conceived.
