From Edward Horn's Introduction: "Wilhelm Loehe's Agende is a mine of information to the student of Liturgics. The third edition, from which this translation has been made, was edited by his son-in-law, Inspector Deinzer. It contains the historical notes which Loehe added to his first edition, and pays a tribute to the liturgical taste and zeal and courage of the American Church by open use of the Kirchenbuch of the General Council. It supplies a valuable commentary on the Common Service, showing how really that Service reproduces the standard Lutheran Liturgy, and also the reserve and delicacy with which it discerns the permanent and essential from the accidental and temporary among Lutheran usages. Loehe does not confine himself to what is found in the Lutheran Service Books. He was admirably fitted to revive Lutheran worship, not only by his faithful study and delicate taste, and by his mastery of a German style which is clear as crystal and as quick as fire, but also by his familiarity with the traditions of the Churches of Nuremberg. It was his aim to complete the Service of the Sixteenth Century by a liberal but discreet use of pre-Reformation forms, and also to correct and supplement the Lutheran, and indeed the Western, Liturgy, by means of the riches of the Service of the Oriental Churches."
(Notes for Readers: This book is in English and was prepared from a scan.)
This volume is part of a greater series entitled 'Fathers of Lutheran Orthodoxy.' The purpose of this series is to present great works of Lutheranism with a focus on the era of Lutheran Orthodoxy, although it also includes prominent works of the 19th and 20th centuries as well.
For too long, the rich theology of Lutheranism's past has been limited to libraries' rare book rooms and cumbersome online PDFs. Therefore, this series endeavors to take public domain books of the Lutheran confession and to make them available for anyone who desires these works in the form of a physical print. This series is meant to include mostly original Latin works, but some works may be in German and even in English.
The final goal is to create both accessibility and interest for studying and reading the works of Lutheran Orthodoxy, with the hope of creating renewed interest in scholars one day translating the rich theology of Lutheranism.
