Description

By the Spear: Philip II, Alexander the Great, and the Rise and Fall of the Macedonian EmpireAlexander the Great, arguably the most exciting figure from antiquity, waged war as a Homeric hero and lived as one, conquering native peoples and territories on a superhuman scale. From the time he invaded Asia in 334 to his death in 323, he expanded the Macedonian empire from Greece in the west to Asia Minor, the Levant, Egypt, Central Asia and "India" (Pakistan and Kashmir) in the east. Alexander the Great, arguably the most exciting figure from antiquity, waged war as a Homeric hero and lived as one, conquering native peoples and territories on a superhuman scale. From the time he invaded Asia in 334 to his death in 323, he expanded the Macedonian empire from Greece in the west to Asia Minor, the Levant, Egypt, Central Asia and "India" (Pakistan and Kashmir) in the east. Although many other kings and generals forged empires, Alexander produced one that was without parallel, even if it was short-lived.

And yet, Alexander could not have achieved what he did without the accomplishments of his father, Philip II (r. 359-336). It was Philip who truly changed the course of Macedonian history, transforming a weak, disunited, and economically backward kingdom into a military powerhouse. A warrior king par excellence, Philip left Alexander with the greatest army in the Greek world, a centralized monarchy, economic prosperity, and a plan to invade Asia.

For the first time, By the Spear offers an exhilarating military narrative of the reigns of these two larger-than-life figures in one volume. Ian Worthington gives full breadth to the careers of father and son, showing how Philip was the architect of the Macedonian empire, which reached its zenith under Alexander, only to disintegrate upon his death. By the Spear also explores the impact of Greek culture in the East, as Macedonian armies became avatars of social and cultural change in lands far removed from the traditional sphere of Greek influence. In addition, the book discusses the problems Alexander faced in dealing with a diverse subject population and the strategies he took to what might be called nation building, all of which shed light on contemporary events in culturally dissimilar regions of the world. The result is a gripping and unparalleled account of the role these kings played in creating a vast empire and the enduring legacy they left behind.

Looks great, gets the job done, definitely not high-end
Color: White, Size: 6-Tier(10.7 x 14.5 x 65.3 Inches)
I purchased not one, but *two* of these shelves for the purposes of storing my massive hoard of plush toys. For what I purchased them for, they get the job done swimmingly and they look great with the rest of my room. Assembly was simple, and although it was fairly easy to figure out, the provided instruction manual may not be easy for some to make sense of. There are also provided pieces for mounting the shelves to the wall for added sturdiness, and though they are included in the parts list, there are no provided instructions for them. One thing buyers should be aware of is the shelves and legs may arrive dirty with the dust and dirt from the factory. It's relatively easy to wipe them off with your hand, but it may not be a good first impression. As other buyers mentioned, a few of the pieces came with visual imperfections that, while easy to hide, may turn away those who are more particular about aesthetics. For the price however, the shelves are still well-made. Other buyers have mentioned concerns about the sturdiness and stability of the shelves. I cannot comment on the sturdiness as plush toys are not particularly heavy, however the shelves do exhibit a wobble (which is to be expected for this particular make of shelf; one without structural support in between the beams). That being said, though it wobbles, it doesn't feel as if it will fall apart easily. The pieces are all solid wood, as well. One negative is when I was putting on one of the feet for the second shelf, I'd twisted it tight (as I did with no issue for the other pieces), but for this particular piece it caused the glued in screw component to pop out. I had to use pliers to remove it from the shelf so I could use one of the spare legs instead. I did not face this issue with any other pieces, but it should be kept in mind that the application of glue across the pieces does not appear to be consistent. All in all, it is a good shelf and I am satisfied with my purchase. I did not expect a pristine or elegant shelf (nor did I intend to buy one), as this is a very fairly priced shelf. I got what I paid for.

This product fits my needs.
Color: Black, Size: 6-Tier(10.7 x 14.5 x 65.3 Inches)
I needed a narrow shelf that was tall so I could place the security system tower on the top shelf for a better connection. It was easy to assemble, came in various colors and the packaging was compact enough to handle. It also came with additional parts so you can change the layout from a tall shelf to smaller end tables. Great for small items, books and very versatile. I will be purchasing this product again!

Love it!!
Color: Brown, Size: 6-Tier(10.7 x 14.5 x 65.3 Inches)
Super easy to install an it looks amazing by my wood desk. It’s not heavy and I didn’t mount it to the wall and I have a bunch of items on it and haven’t had a problem. It is not real wood but that doesn’t bother me and I love the color.
