The shipyards, engineering works, sugar refineries, and mills employed many people and unemployment in the town was relatively low. People were better off financially and most homes had a television set, and some families even had a motor car.
There was hope and optimism that the right decisions would be made to ensure that Greenock continued to flourish and grow.
