Telecommunication networks are undergoing deep changes, not only caused by new entrants and new market (de)regulation, but increasingly by disruptive technological developments. The transition from traditional copper-based access networks to fiber networks with tremendous bandwidth is the most conspicuous example for this transformation also known as Ònext generation broadbandÓ.

Such fundamental changes pose enormous strategic challenges to all players involved: network operators, service providers, regulators, and public at large. The author addresses three specific topics within this field: pricing policies and investment strategies, virtualization and collaborative strategies, and network neutrality. They are exemplary for the future development of this industry at the crossroad of technology, market strategy, and society.

The research results are very helpful for a better understanding of future telco infrastructures and their specific economic, political, and management challenges.
