The South's relationship with drinking is complicated. Although religious and legal mandates discourage the sale and consumption of alcohol, the region has a robust drinking culture. As the home of NASCAR, a sport that arose from the high-speed antics of bootleggers, and Tennessee Williams, a man notorious for both his literary genius and his propensity to imbibe, the Bible Belt has a booze-soaked background. In the recipes and essays in The Southern Foodways Alliance Guide to Cocktails, Jerry Slater and Sara Camp Milam and their cocktail cabinet of contributors bridge the gaps between the culture, history, and practice of drinking in the South.

Nearly one hundred easy-to-follow recipes instruct the home bartender how to create memorable drinks, whether they be light tipples or potent bell ringers. Milam and Slater organize their historical how-to by drink family, starting with day-drinking classics suitable for brunches and tailgating, such as the Michelada and the Ruby Slipper. Variations on the French 75, lovingly lauded by food writer Kat Kinsman, and various juleps, cobblers, and sours are also covered, as are strong finishes such as the Sazerac and the Vieux Carr . A final set of recipes focuses on the punch bowl, with instructions on how to mix such shareable libations as Chatham Artillery Punch and Watermelon Sangria. Milam and Slater also share information on essential tools and glassware with which to stock the home bar, as well as mixing and garnishing techniques.

In addition, the book contains fifteen fun and informative essays on drink culture, including a profile of white whiskey whisperer Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton by historian Mark Essig, a piece on the kitschy pleasure of collecting figurative decanters by syndicated OC Weekly and Ask a Mexican columnist Gustavo Arellano, and an essay by the dean of cocktail history, David Wondrich, on "The Future of Southern Drinking."

Lest we drink on an empty stomach, recipes for cocktail bites are provided by multiple James Beard Award nominee Vishwesh Bhatt. The Oxford, Mississippi-based Snackbar chef shares recipes for Benedictine Spread, Catfish Rillettes, Deviled Pickled Eggs, Deviled Ham, Okra Chaat, Pickled Shrimp, Shrimp Toast, Snackbar Pimento Cheese, Sweet Potato Biscuits with Pear Jam, and Spicy, Crunchy Black-Eyed Peas.

I would buy this twice!
Style: Sport, Size: 12in
This Chuckit! Dog Ball Launcher 12M Sport is the perfect product for the dog park! It makes games of fetch so much easier and more fun — the long handle gives great reach, so I can launch balls super far without even bending over, and our dog goes absolutely wild chasing them. It’s comfortable to hold, works smoothly with 2.5" dog balls, and really saves your arm and back if you’re doing a lot of throwing. The design is sturdy and reliable, so we can play for longer without worrying about it snapping or wearing out. If you spend time at the dog park or love playing fetch, this launcher turns a regular game into something even better — our pup gets twice the exercise and we get to enjoy every minute of playtime!

Caution can cause addiction
Style: Sport, Size: 12in
My dog has become addicted to tennis balls because of this! She sees the blue handle and she immediately loses her mind! I love it because I don't have to bend down as far to pick up the ball, which is amazing after 2 back surgeries.

12 " too short, no direction.
Style: Sport, Size: 12in
I got the twelve inch handle. It is too short and does not flex enough to release ball in right direction. Its almost impossible to aim and doesn't sent the ball far enough.

Great for heavy chewers! Belgian Malinois Approved!
Color: E) 8-Pack 2.5" Balls (Yellow)
I bought these 6 months ago because my dog kept loosing his Kong balls. These were such a better price ball (but still had good reviews) that I thought I would give them a try. They are wonderful. After six months of chewing and chasing and playing with a Belgian Malinois, the two that I’ve gotten out are still in great condition. The bright color makes them easier to find, so none have been permanently lost yet. They are bouncier and a little bit lighter weight compared to the Kong balls of the same size, which I honestly appreciate because my maligator likes to shoot them at my feet. So far the material seems high quality and I feel safe letting the dog chew on it for hours on end. The 8 pack was cheaper than 2 Kong balls. A great deal for a great product!!
