During the 1930s, the Federal Writers' Project undertook the task of locating former slaves and recording their oral histories. The more than ten thousand pages of interviews with over two thousand former slaves were filed in the Library of Congress, where they were known to scholars and historians but few others. From this storehouse of information, Belinda Hurmence has chosen twenty-seven narratives from the twelve hundred typewritten pages of interviews with 284 former South Carolina slaves. The result is a moving, eloquent, and often surprising firsthand account of the last years of slavery and first years of freedom. The former slaves describe the clothes they wore, the food they ate, the houses they lived in, the work they did, and the treatment they received. They give their impressions of Yankee soldiers, the Klan, their masters, and their newfound freedom. Belinda Hurmence was born in Oklahoma, raised in Texas, and educated at the University of Texas and Columbia University. She has written several novels for young people, including Tough Tiffany (an ALA Notable Book), A Girl Called Boy (winner of the Parents' Choice Award), and The Nightwalker. She has also edited My Folks Don't Want Me to Talk About Slavery and We Lived in a Little Cabin in the Yard, companion volumes to this book. She now lives in Raleigh, NC.Binding Type: Paperback

Couple Win
Color: Spa Blue, Size: King
The Amazon Basics Lightweight Soft King Size Comforter has been a wonderful purchase for our home! The comforter is incredibly soft, comes in beautiful colors, and is the perfect lightweight option for year-round use. My husband and I have very different sleep preferences—I tend to run hot while he’s always cold—but this comforter somehow works perfectly for both of us. It’s breathable enough that I stay comfortable while still providing enough warmth for him. We finally started sharing the same blanket again, which is a win in itself! Highly recommend for couples with different temperature preferences. 🛏️💕✨

Light Weight but Not Hot
Color: Dark Grey, Size: King
Ok... I absolutely love this comforter. In fact, I use it on three different beds. The colors are perfect. The material is soft. It's extremely light weight, but it keeps you warm in the winter and does not overheat you in the summer. I have this in King and Queen, and the sizing has been good for both. I have thrown it in my washing machine multiple times, and it holds up well. Great quality, low price.

Navy is pretty, but doesn’t feel like a great quality set.
Color: Navy Blue, Size: King
I purchased the Navy. The color is great and the pleated pattern is a nice touch. My daughter has the white and it’s very soft. The navy is not, though. So that was disappointing. It’s also not breathable. It’s not thick, but just not breathable. I actually get pretty warm at night with this one when I don’t normally with any other blankets. It also seems on the small side. We have a king and always buy king, this just feels a little smaller. Doesn’t feel high quality. I would not buy again.

Very Elegant!!
Color: Bright White, Size: Full/Queen
Beautiful comforter set! its super fluffy light weight while still cozy, gives a clean expensive look. It arrives wrinkled up from being packaged, i never steamed mine but you could do that if you want a crisp look. I love the quality and looks more expensive then it was, highly recommend!
