What is it to grieve for the death of a parent? More literary and experiential than other philosopical works on emotion, Upheavals of Thought will engage the reader who has ever stopped to ask that question. Emotions such as grief, fear, anger and love seem to be alien forces that disturb our thoughts and plans. Yet they also embody some of our deepest thoughts--about the importance of the people we love, about the vulnerability of our bodies and our plans to events beyond our control. In this wide-ranging book, based on her Gifford Lectures, philosopher Martha Nussbaum draws on philosophy, psychology, anthropology, music and literature to illuminate the role emotions play in our thoughts about important goals. Starting with an account of her own mother's death, she argues that emotions are intelligent appraisals of a world that we do not control, in the light of our own most significant goals and plans. She then investigates the implications of this idea for normative issues, analyzing the role of compassion in private and public reasoning and the attempts of authors both philosophical and literary to purify or reform the emotion of erotic love. Ultimately, she illuminates the structure of emotions and argues that once we understand the complex intelligence of emotions we will also have new reasons to value works of literature as sources of ethical education. Martha C. Nussbaum is Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics, University of Chicago, appointed in Law School, Philosophy department, and Divinity School, and an Associate in Classics. A leading scholar in ancient Greek ethics, aesthetics and literature, her previous books include The Fragility of Goodness (Cambridge, 1986), Loves's Knowledge (Oxford, 1992), Poetic Justice (Beacon Press, 1997), The Therapy of Desire (Princeton, 1996), Cultivating Humanity (Harvard, 1997), and Sex and Social Justice (Oxford, 1999). Her reviews have appeared in the New York Times, Boston Globe, New York Review of Books, and New Republic.Binding Type: Paperback

Only product that doesn't settle into my pores!
I have so many liquid and powder foundations, you name it I've tried it! They all settle into the pores on my nose to the point where sometimes I almost feel it looks better without makeup. I'm not usually a bb cream person because I have quite oily skin, but this stuff is magic. It is very similar to a silicone based primer, but works better. It has surprisingly good coverage, I just add another layer to problem areas, and spot conceal if needed. However, this doesn't have the best staying power, but none of my foundations ever stay on anyway! So I set it with powder, either loose or even a light layer of a powder foundation and it looks very nice. Also sometimes if I want to wear a different foundation I'll use this just on my nose area sort of like a primer. I am 28 with oily skin, minor breakouts, and an nc20 with a lot of redness, which this evens out, for reference.

Great Substitute for Dr. Jart Dis-A-Pore
I did a ton of research after my tried and true Dr. Jart's Dis-A-Pore was discontinued. There are rumors that it will return but I'm reluctant to believe that. This product was recommended as a substitute after much research and I thought it was worth a shot. This is the real deal. I was a light-medium with dr Jart and I am the lighter version of this product. I love how it feels on my skin, it's like a matte velvet. I am definitely acne prone even as I approach 30 and redness occurs often. I'm very pleased with how natural and yet polished this product makes me feel and look.
My only complaint would be that $30 is pretty steep for 1 ounce of the product. However, it works and that's what is most important to me!
Update: I've had this product for almost 6 months and wear it almost every day - I would say a little goes a long way and that $30 is totally reasonable considering how long it has lasted!

Great lotion for very dry skin
Style: Updated Formula
I had a laser done on my face and the products they gave me weren't working. This came highly recommended so I gave it a try. I'm very glad I did! It moisturized my face really well without appearing greasy.
I used the rest when my face got dry from winter (in th midwest).
Felt very rich and smooth. Medium thickness.
