A stunning example of a calcite ammonite fossil of the species Asteroceras obtusum from the world-famous Jurassic Coast beach of Lyme Regis, Dorset UK.

The piece of limestone matrix measures 270 mm (10.62 inches) tall and the fossil ammonite measures 87 mm (3.42 inches) across. The ammonite is very well preserved and has been prepared out of the rock to reveal the details of the shell. The ribs are very finely defined, and the pale yellow colour is beautiful. It is unusual to find a large Asteroceras like this preserved in pure yellow calcite. There is also a smaller ammonite of the species Promicroceras planicosta to the side of the main ammonite. 

The matrix has been shaped to make it a sculptural piece that displays wonderfully. A great example of a popular species and impressive in the flesh. The fossil weighs 6.2 Kg and has a cut flat base to allow it to stand freely on its own for display.

Around 196 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
