Of course, Extreme was a big-hair tight-pants glam metal hard rock band in the late 80s/early 90s, and it was apparently most galling to them that their biggest hit, their only #1, was this lovely soft love ballad. Apparently they once refused to play the song live in Poland, while supporting Aerosmith on tour, and Steve Tyler had to reprimand them: "play the damn song!". 'More Than Words' was Extreme's 'Creep [Iron Lung]'. It's also another song oft-misunderstood, because a passing encounter with it might lead to you to believe it simply celebrates love: why, I love you more than words! Well, no, it's more pointed than that: it's a complaint that the singer's partner is talking the talk but not walking the walk, and the song is his way of saying, 'hey, it would be nice if you showed your love for me in tangible [physical?] ways, because you're just giving me lip-service and I think our love ought to be more than just words'. So, to visualize that, here's a rocker guy (the JD is the closest pulp version of the 80s glam rocker I could find) clearly unimpressed with his girl's reticence: he's put the more than words? challenge to her, and she's botching it. As I imagine he suspected.
