The Opengear CM7148-2-SAC Device Server is a high-performance out-of-band (OOB) management appliance designed to simplify and accelerate the management of critical network, server, and power infrastructure across data centers and remote sites. Built for reliability in demanding environments, this console server delivers persistent, secure access to devices even when the primary network path is unavailable. Administrators gain unprecedented visibility and control, enabling faster fault isolation, proactive remediation, and reduced on-site visits. The CM7148-2-SAC blends Opengear’s proven OOB capabilities with scalable hardware and a rich software stack to keep critical systems online, improve mean time to recovery (MTTR), and protect service uptime in the face of outages or maintenance windows.

With an emphasis on resilience and automation, the CM7148-2-SAC provides comprehensive out-of-band connectivity for a wide range of devices—network gear, servers, and power infrastructure—through secure console access, remote SSH/TLS sessions, and persistent console redirection. This makes it an essential component for data centers, branch offices, and remote sites where hands-on management is impractical. The device server consolidates multiple management channels, simplifies complex remediation workflows, and offers intelligent failover and path diversity to maintain control when networks fail. In short, it is designed to minimize downtime, shorten incident response times, and empower IT teams to manage critical assets from anywhere.

What sets the CM7148-2-SAC apart is its ability to translate complex infrastructure conditions into actionable insights. It continuously monitors vital parameters, runs proactive diagnostics, and executes automation-driven remediation sequences—such as controlled reboots, power-cycle sequences, and targeted console access—without requiring on-site presence. This proactive approach helps teams detect issues earlier, verify fixes remotely, and validate service restoration with confidence. The device is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing data center management ecosystems, enabling centralized control across multiple sites while preserving security, auditability, and operational efficiency.

Beyond core OOB management, the CM7148-2-SAC is built to scale with growing infrastructure demands. It supports multiple serial interfaces, Ethernet connectivity, and flexible network paths to ensure administrators can reach devices through alternate routes if one path becomes unavailable. Its robust security model includes encrypted communications, role-based access control, and comprehensive auditing to meet enterprise governance requirements. Combined with Opengear’s software tools and APIs, this appliance becomes a cornerstone of modern IT resilience strategies, enabling rapid response, automated recovery, and consistent governance across hybrid networks.

In practice, the CM7148-2-SAC helps organizations deliver superior uptime by combining reliable hardware with intelligent software. It provides quick, secure access to remote devices, empowers operators with detailed diagnostics and remediation workflows, and integrates with orchestration and IT service management tools to streamline incident response. For teams tasked with maintaining uptime in data centers and remote facilities, this device server offers a compelling blend of accessibility, automation, and security that translates into tangible reductions in outage duration and operational risk.

  • Comprehensive out-of-band management for network, server, and power infrastructure: get persistent, secure remote console access even when the primary network is offline. It supports secure SSH/TLS sessions and serial console redirection, with role-based access control to ensure that only authorized personnel can perform sensitive operations.
  • Powerful monitoring, diagnostics, and remediation: continuous health checks and event-driven automation enable rapid fault isolation and automated recovery workflows. Reboot and power-cycle actions can be carried out remotely, helping you restore service quickly without on-site visits.
  • Scalable, multi-site deployment: multiple management interfaces and resilient network paths support centralized control across data centers, branches, and remote facilities. The CM7148-2-SAC integrates with Opengear’s orchestration and management ecosystems to streamline operations at scale.
  • Security-first design: encrypted communications, secure boot, firmware integrity, audit logs, and support for secure authentication methods safeguard access to critical infrastructure and support regulatory compliance.
  • Seamless integration and automation: APIs and native integrations with Opengear Lighthouse and other ITSM/automation platforms enable automated workflows, proactive alerting, and holistic visibility across your hybrid environment.

How to install Opengear CM7148-2-SAC

Installing the CM7148-2-SAC starts with planning your out-of-band management topology. Identify your key remote sites, the devices you need to reach, and the network paths you will use for management traffic. This planning ensures you configure reliable failover paths and consistent remediation workflows from day one.

1) Rack or place the device server in a secure, well-ventilated location and ensure it has network connectivity to your management network and the devices it will control.

2) Connect the management Ethernet interface to your secure management network. If you plan to use additional pathways, connect those interfaces as well to provide alternate routes for OOB access.

3) Attach serial console cables to the devices you want to manage (servers, switches, PDUs, etc.) and connect the other ends to the CM7148-2-SAC serial ports. This establishes direct, persistent console access for remote troubleshooting.

4) Power up the device and access the initial setup UI via the provided console or a secure web interface. Configure basic network settings, user accounts, and role-based access controls, ensuring administrators have the appropriate permissions for their roles.

5) Configure authentication, encryption, and auditing policies. Enable TLS/SSH, set up user groups, and enable logging so you have a clear, auditable trail of administrator actions.

6) Integrate with your management ecosystem. Connect the Opengear appliance to Lighthouse or your chosen orchestration/ITSM platform, define automation workflows, and import device inventories to streamline change management and remediation processes.

7) Create remediation playbooks. Define common fault conditions (for example, network device outages or server console lockups) and corresponding automated actions (console access, reboot sequences, or power cycling) to reduce MTTR.

8) Validate functionality with a controlled test. Simulate a controlled outage to verify remote access remains available, authentication works as intended, and automated workflows trigger correctly.

9) Document the configuration. Maintain a configuration guide detailing user roles, network paths, remediation playbooks, and integration points so teams can operate consistently during incidents.

10) Maintain ongoing updates. Regularly monitor firmware and security updates from Opengear, apply patches through secure channels, and review access logs to stay ahead of evolving threats.

Detailed coverage of Active Directory
Format: Kindle
I spent several years very close to active directory but haven’t followed developments in recent years. I was interested in this book as a refresher on what’s new in the last 8-10 years – and it did not disappoint. The chapter on Advanced AD Management with PowerShell does a great job providing some background, setting the stage for why we’d want to know this, and providing some brief descriptions of various cmdlets that might be needed. My last experience with PowerShell/Active Directory required the Quest module, so seeing these native cmdlets is a nice change. The chapter on AD FS is very detailed, providing a history of the functionality, deployment topologies and considerations, as well as details on configuring the required components. This is a topic I was not familiar with before seeing this book, and it did a good job bringing me up to speed on the feature. I have not made it all the way through this book, but the sections I have completed are very good. If you are looking for a thorough reference guide on the current state of Active Directory, you should check out this book.

Realistic book of el Camino de Santiago
Format: Paperback
This is the most realistic and informative book I've read about el Camino de Santiago, (and I've read no less than 10 in my preparation to walk el Camino). It is beautifully written, inspirational, humble and encouraging. The reality of the albergues or refugios hit me, so I decided to book in private albergues or pensiones in advance. Thank you Joyce for opening our eyes about the hard parts of the Camino, but also of all the beauty and the transformative experience. I hope to savor some of what you and Tome did (minus the albergues), and to learn to appreciate every little thing that we take it for granted. Beautiful book! A must read for all who wants to walk The Way.

Real and Uninhibited
Format: Paperback
I’m planning to walk the Camino this fall and bought several books describing personal journeys. This book filled my soul with the author’s well-described authentic expression of her inner journey—the joys, the fears, the icks and the ahhhs. So honest, so inspiring, uninhibited and very real. Not a day-by-day account of a diary but rather the lessons lived and learned along The Way. Beautiful. I would love to give her a long and heart-felt hug for what I gained from her story. 💖
