"The Golden Sister" by Suzanne Do is a compelling debut novel that intricately weaves themes of family, loss, and the search for truth. Set in the picturesque coastal village of Swanning, the story follows Lili Berry, who is trying to maintain a semblance of order in her life when the sudden death of her sister, Honey, shatters her world. Driven by a need to understand the circumstances surrounding Honey's death, Lili embarks on an investigative journey that provides a temporary escape from her overwhelming grief.

In her quest for answers, Lili encounters Pete, a man with a tragic past of his own. Pete's life has been marked by the unresolved disappearance of his young son fifteen years prior. Their paths cross when Lili discovers that Pete was the one who found Honey's body. This connection leads to an unlikely partnership, where Lili offers Pete beer in exchange for swimming lessons, symbolizing her dive into the depths of hidden truths and buried emotions.

As Lili delves deeper into the mystery, she uncovers a tangled web of secrets and lies that challenge her perceptions and force her to confront harsh realities. The narrative is both achingly funny and heartbreakingly sad, capturing the complexities of familial bonds and the unexpected comfort found in the kindness of strangers.

"The Golden Sister" is a poignant exploration of the human condition, celebrating the resilience of love and the enduring strength of family ties. Suzanne Do's storytelling is both evocative and engaging, drawing readers into a world where the past and present collide, and where the journey to uncover the truth becomes a path to healing and self-discovery.

Entertaining, informative, without being overwhelming.
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
Got it for, basically, half-off standard retail. At that price, it's a fine addition to the WWII library. Some interesting information displayed in a mostly entertaining way. I get that battle maps are always a challenge (maps are static - battles are dynamic). This does a fairly adequate job - better than most battle maps - though far from groundbreaking. item arrived well packed - no issues with binding (as some others seem to report). Though the book overall is a bit "warped" and several of the maps are mis-printed or mis-cut as to make them unusable. 3 bad out of 300 - not horrible - again at the price I paid. If the subject interest you - I'd suggest getting - but not a "must have".
