It is intended for portrait, landscape, and astrophotography photography. The optical design, which has three extra-low dispersion elements and an ultra-precision aspherical element, provides exceptional resolution and reduces chromatic and spherical aberrations for enhanced clarity, sharpness, and colour accuracy. In order to achieve higher contrast when working in harsh lighting conditions, an ultra multicoating has also been applied to reduce ghosting and flare.

The lens has a 2.3-inch minimum focusing distance to accommodate working with up-close subjects and a linear STM autofocus motor for quick, quiet, and precise focusing performance. Focus hold, a custom switch, and a focus range limiter switch are three different customised buttons for improved functionality. For astrophotography, it has an astro-focus function as well. The weather-sealed design provides defence against snow, light rain, and dust.
