These three watercolour and rootbeer drawings by famed Winnipeg-born artist Marcel Dzama are quintessential examples of the work that brought Dzama to international acclaim. Like many of Dzama’s celebrated drawings, these early works beautifully capture a glimpse of the artist’s stream of consciousness and decidedly cinematic approach to illustration, storytelling and the imaging of worlds and dreamscapes that hover between heroic and humble, mundane and spectacular, beautiful and horrific.

Dzama is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Brooklyn.  Born and raised in Manitoba, Dzama is known for his drawing, sculptures, dioramas, films, and paintings.  His work is characterized by an immediately recognizable visual language that draws from a diverse range of pop culture references and artistic influences. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba’s School of Art in 1997. Dzama has exhibited extensively across the world, with recent solo exhibitions including Revolution Blues, Galleri Magnus Karlsson, Stockholm; Drawing on a Revolution, La Casa Encendida, Madrid; A Flower of Evil, Sies + Höke, Düsseldorf; The Fallen Fables, Crown Point Press, San Francisco; and Hollow Laughter, Kunstmuseum Thun, Switzerland. Dzama’s work is represented in collections across the world, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Gallery; London; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
