The biggest problem is throttle response. The larger a turbocharger is, the higher its threshold is; this means its optimum RPM range ends up significantly higher in the RPM range. Essentially, a large turbocharger will not spool up very fast and won't make low-end power very much. All of these things kill drivability, making your car awful on the street.

This hybrid turbocharger idea is exactly what Tomei is doing with their new MX-Series of turbochargers.
