artist bio
Curt Rydell was born May 28, 1901 in Härnösand. He was a Swedish artist, print maker and illustrator.
Rydell studied at Carl Wilhelmson’s Målarskola in Stockholm from 1919 to 1920, at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München from 1920 to 1922, the Académie Colarossi, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Académie Ranson in Paris in 1928 and 1930. He tool study trips to Italy and the Nordic countries.
He exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions. Solo shows included in Härnösand in 1920, 1922 and 1929, the Lilla utstaalningen in Stockholm in 1927, at the Mässhallen in Stockholm in 1931, 1939 and 1941, at the Halland Museum in Halmstad in 1950, Falköping in 1955, at Värnamo in 1952 and 1953, and Jönköping 1960 and 1961. Alongside Gusty Olsson, he exhibited in Ulricehamn in 1950 and 1951. He showed in group exhibitions with Sveriges allmänna konstförening (Sweden's general art association) at Liljevalch's art gallery in 1935 and in exhibitions arranged by Södra Vätterbygden's art association and at Ulricehamn's art association in 1952 and 1955, at Södra Vätterbygden's vårsalonger (Spring Salons) in Jönköping in 1958 and 1959 and at exhibitions in Borås and Östersund in 1954. Rydell subject matter included harbour scenes, portraits and landscape executed oil, ink or pencil. As a print maker he produced woodcuts. He also worked as an illustrator and created work for the weekly newspaper Bonniers veckotidning and Svenska Dagbladet.
Rydell is represented in public collections including work at Halland's Museum in Halmstad and Södra Ving's medieval church in Hökerum.
He passed away at the age of 65 on died April 2, 1967 in Jönköping.
