After the Ashdown James LoMenzo Hyper Drive bass pedal was such a hit, Ashdown and James thought, “How can we make a great pedal even better?” So, Ashdown’s designer Dave Green hit the drawing board once again. What he designed was a pedal with all the driving harmonic righteousness of the Hyper Drive but with unique features that set it apart from other bass distortion pedals on the market. The Mega Drive’s highpass and lowpass frequency controls allow bassists to sculpt their sound like never before. Here you can widen or narrow the harmonic spectrum in the distortion circuit as you see fit. You also get to mix it along with your bass’s own pristine tone to achieve something totally killer and unique. Lastly, the Mega Drive’s true bypass switching means signal chain transparency whenever used with your other pedals. From rich, deep distortion to modern glass-cutting high-end drive, the Mega Drive is poised to blow your mind. As James said, “Now, take this Mega Drive and go out and make a big noise!”
Ashdown engineered the James LoMenzo Mega Drive to last a lifetime. After all, when you’re the bassist for Megadeth, you need a pedal that can strut its stuff to the max without breaking a sweat. And this isn’t just another signature pedal — James himself uses this beast onstage to cultivate his own bass tone!
A VU meter gives you visual feedback on how hard your bass hits the input of the LoMenzo Mega Drive. Players with multiple basses will appreciate how easy it is to “tune” the pedal for each instrument using the adjustable input knob. The sweet spot appears to be just shy of the red, so you can use this as a benchmark each time you change your signal chain. You won’t find this perk on other pedals.
