Gentlemen is the fourth studio album by The Afghan Whigs, originally released on Elektra Records in 1993. Written largely while touring behind their 1992 album Congregation, the record marks a sharp creative peak for the band, with frontman Greg Dulli crafting a loosely connected narrative about the disintegration of a toxic relationship. Drawing influence from soul music, Motown, and the emotional depth of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, the album blends post-punk guitar work with slower, moodier tempos and a brooding lyrical intensity.
Recorded mostly at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Gentlemen pushed the Whigs' sound further from their Sub Pop roots and into darker, more cinematic territory. Standout tracks like “Debonair,” “Be Sweet,” and “What Jail Is Like” highlight Dulli’s unfiltered storytelling and the band’s ability to stretch beyond grunge into something more nuanced and unsettling.
Widely considered the Afghan Whigs’ masterpiece, Gentlemen earned critical acclaim upon release and has only grown in stature since. A deluxe reissue (Gentlemen at 21) followed in 2014, and the album remains a key entry in any serious ‘90s rock collection. One of the decade’s most emotionally raw and well-written records.
