Silk is a braided, non-absorbable sterile suture material designed for surgical use, made from the organic protein fibroin. This protein is derived from the domesticated species Bombyx mori (B. mori), belonging to the Bombycidae family.
Properties: Offers gentle tissue penetration while ensuring maximum knot security.
Indications: The silk material is suitable for the general approximation or ligation of soft tissue, such as in cardiovascular, neurological, or ophthalmological surgeries.
Contraindications: This material should not be used by individuals who have a known sensitivity or allergy to silk. Due to the gradual loss of tensile strength over time, silk surgical sutures should be avoided in situations where this loss is not acceptable.
Unwanted reactions: Potential adverse reactions to this medical device may include: wound dehiscence, gradual loss of tensile strength, allergic reactions in individuals with a known silk allergy, stone formation in the urinary and biliary tract after extended exposure to saline solutions such as urine or bile, wound infections, acute inflammatory responses, and temporary local irritation.
Absorption: The silk threads are not absorbed; however, the protein-containing silk fibers may undergo progressive hydrolysis in vivo, resulting in a gradual decrease in tensile strength.
