Brendan was a missionary who founded a number of monasteries in Ireland and along the Atlantic seaboard. He became known as the patron saint of sailors and navigators and is reputed to have travelled to Iceland and is said to have beaten Christopher Columbus to the Americas by some 800 years, sailing in a leather boat.
