About This Listing
This listing is for a hand-painted clay pendant featuring an intricate gouache seascape inspired by Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The pendants are finished with two coats of UV-resistant gloss varnish on the front, and left unvarnished on the back so as to highlight the gritty earthen texture of the fired clay. They are signed and dated by the artist on the back. Each pendant measures approximately 1.5 inches in diameter and comes with a 21-inch silver-plated figaro chain. It will be packaged in a decorative Kraft jewelry box with velvety black backing, and accompanied by a printed and signed label detailing the specifications of the piece and including the quotation that inspired it. These Pride and Prejudice pendants were created in a batch of five and will not be renewed or recreated once they've sold out. 

Because these pendants are handmade and hand-painted, no two are identical, although all share the same colors and general design. Each is a unique original work of art.  

To ensure a long life for your hand-painted pendant, keep it dry and take care not to drop it or scratch the surface. Dust as needed with a clean microfiber cloth.

Mrs. Bennet is just awful. An unscrupulous, mercenary woman, she's known for her shameless manipulation, shallow vanity, and noisy fretting. Indeed, her cringeworthy antics supply most of the humor in Jane Austen's best-loved novel, Pride and Prejudice. But I've recently begun trying to think about Mrs. Bennet in a, well, perhaps bigger way. She is undoubtedly a rude and selfish character, but her falsity, scheming, and unseemly attempts to marry her daughters off to wealthy men are, we must confess, logical responses to a patriarchal context where women's very survival was legally dependent on their relationships to men. Mrs. Bennet is ridiculous, but her ridiculousness is but an extension of the ridiculous environment she's living in. And this, to some extent, is Jane Austen's whole point—a point often missed in our time, especially by her most ardent admirers. 

In this limited set of five handpainted pendants celebrating Pride & Prejudice, I wanted to indulge in a little laughing at the ridiculous Mrs. Bennet—but also a little laughing with her. 

Note: In an attempt to connect my little illustration to Jane Austen's world, I riffed heavily on a Brighton seascape painted by one of her contemporaries, artist William Henry Stothard Scott.
