The collection introduced the group’s music to a new generation and became one of the best-selling rock compilations of all time, with more than seven million copies sold in the United States across vinyl and CD formats.
The tracklist draws from every phase of the Doors’ career, spotlighting enduring classics like “Light My Fire,” “Break on Through,” “Touch Me,” “Hello, I Love You,” and “Riders on the Storm.” The selections capture the essence of the band’s evolution—from the raw, psychedelic edge of their 1967 debut to the moody, jazz-inflected sound of their later albums.
AllMusic critic Andy Kellman later called Greatest Hits “a solid introduction” to the band, praising its inclusion of their most iconic material while noting that tracks such as “Not to Touch the Earth” and “The Ghost Song” could have been replaced by deeper cuts. Despite minor quibbles, the album remains one of the most accessible and widely owned entry points into the Doors’ catalog.
