The insulators primary role is to securely hold the fence line without power leaking from post to ground. A well-designed insulator will hold the line securely so that it will not wear the tape, rope or wire when buffeted around by the elements or will allow the line to freely pass through without the impedance of sharp edges. Off-set insulators hold the line away from the post giving extra clearance from hedges and walls, additional insurance from rubbing and chewing or from potential arcing problems if installing on stock fencing. Off-sets are also useful for outwitting pests and predators. Installed at the base of a chicken run provides a 'scare' wire for the incoming predator or can be carefully placed to catch the sensitive ears of burrowing pests. This type of insulator can be positioned at every other post as it is less likely to make contact with intervening posts.
