The Black Box Async RS232 Extender over CATx - DB9 with Control Signals to Terminal Block is designed for professionals who need reliable, long-range serial communications without sacrificing data integrity or ease of installation. Built to overcome the inherent distance limitations of traditional RS-232 connections, this extender delivers a durable, plug‑and‑play solution that carries asynchronous serial data over standard CATx cabling. With a DB9 interface on the primary side and a terminal block for connect-and-route control signals on the remote side, it accommodates modern industrial setups, kiosks, point-of-sale terminals, and automation systems where RS-232 remains a trusted workhorse. If you’re dealing with industrial environments, field installations, or equipment located far from the host computer, this extender provides a practical, cost-effective way to maintain robust serial communication without resorting to specialized cabling or adapters.

  • Extends RS-232 serial communication over CATx cabling, enabling longer distances than traditional RS-232 limits while preserving full-duplex data transmission for reliable performance in industrial settings.
  • DB9 interface on the master end paired with a terminal block on the remote end for convenient routing of control signals, including handshake lines, DTR/DSR, RTS/CTS, and other RS-232 control signals as required by your device.
  • Plug‑and‑play installation with no software drivers needed—simply connect the CATx cable, attach the RS-232 device to the DB9 port, and configure the terminal block signals to match your application.
  • Rugged, industrial-grade design featuring durable construction and EMI resistance to withstand factory floors, retail kiosks, and field deployments where reliability is essential.
  • Supports standard RS-232 signaling and asynchronous data transfer, ensuring compatibility with a broad range of legacy equipment, CNC controllers, barcode systems, and instrumentation that still rely on serial communication.

Technical Details of Black Box Async RS232 Extender over CATx - DB9 with Control Signals to Terminal Block

  • Interface: RS-232 asynchronous serial extension with a DB9 connector on the transmitting end and a terminal block for control signals on the remote side, enabling full handshake signal routing as required by your devices.
  • Cable compatibility: Designed to operate over CATx cabling (Cat5e/6 typically recommended), leveraging existing infrastructure to minimize installation costs and simplify deployment.
  • Signal integrity: Built to preserve data integrity across extended runs, with considerations for wiring length, shielding, and interference common in industrial environments.
  • Power and indicators: External power supply required; status indicators provide at-a-glance information about link status and data activity for quick diagnostics.
  • Durability: Industrial-grade enclosure optimized for reliability in challenging environments, with mounting options suitable for desktop placement or enclosure integration.

How to install Black Box Async RS232 Extender over CATx - DB9 with Control Signals to Terminal Block

  • Plan your topology: determine which device will be connected at the master (DB9) end and how the remote terminal block will be used to route control signals.
  • Power down all devices before installing; identify the master unit (the RS-232 transmitter/host) and the remote unit (the receiver/terminal) to ensure correct orientation.
  • Connect the CATx cable between the two extender units, ensuring solid contact in both ends and using appropriate shielding if your installation environment demands it.
  • Attach your RS-232 device to the DB9 port on the master end, selecting the correct DTE/DCE orientation to match your equipment’s expectations (cross or straight-through wiring as required).
  • Configure the terminal block on the remote side to carry the necessary control signals (RTS/CTS, DTR/DSR, DCD, and other signals) according to the needs of the connected device or automation controller.
  • Apply power to both extenders and verify that the status indicators show a healthy link; test the serial connection with a terminal program or device-specific software to confirm data integrity and handshake operation.
  • Document your cabling and pin assignments for future maintenance, and consider labeling cables and ports to simplify troubleshooting or future expansions.

Frequently asked questions

  • Q: What is the primary benefit of using this RS232 extender over CATx? A: The extender enables longer cable runs than standard RS-232 limits while maintaining reliable, full-duplex serial communication. It also centralizes control signals on a terminal block for flexible routing to multiple devices in industrial environments.
  • Q: Do I need software or drivers to use this device? A: No software drivers are required. The solution is designed to be plug‑and‑play, transparent to host software, and compatible with existing RS-232 devices without additional configuration beyond pin mapping for control signals.
  • Q: Which cables can I use with this extender? A: The product is designed to run over CATx cabling (such as Cat5e/6). The exact distance and performance will depend on the quality of the CATx cable and the baud rate used for RS-232 communication.
  • Q: Can I route control signals to multiple remote devices? A: The terminal block on the remote end is designed to accommodate essential RS-232 control lines. Depending on the model, you may tailor which signals are routed, but this typically supports RTS/CTS, DTR/DSR, and related lines for reliable handshaking and device control.
  • Q: What baud rates are supported? A: The extender is designed for standard RS-232 communication; typical support includes common baud rates up to 115,200 bps or similar, depending on the specific hardware revision and cable quality. For higher performance requirements, verify compatibility with your devices.
  • Q: Is it suitable for industrial environments? A: Yes. Built with an industrial-grade design, it’s intended to withstand the rigors of manufacturing floors, kiosks, and field deployments where EMI, vibration, and temperature variations are factors.

Winner, Winner! say My Three Dogs
Size: 3.8 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: Sweet Potato, Ring
I'm always looking for different treats for my three dogs (10, 20 and 30 pounds, I don't ever recall giving my dogs anything with a pumpkin flavor, so I decided to trythese i-paw pumpkin flavored treats (I got the rings). All three of my dogs took the treat immediately and went off into their separate corners to chew away (one of my dogs is pretty fussy, so I was surprised she took it without hesitation). I'm no expert in dog treat ingredients, but I didn't see anything on the ingredients list that looked objectionable. While advertised as a rawhyde replacement, these rings don't last anywhere near as long as a rawhide, so while my dogs didn't wolf them down as fast as a conventional treat, they weren't left occupied for the half hour that a rawhide of this size might have kept them entertained (except for one of my dogs, who took an hour to finish hers, but she only has 7 teeth left in her mouth, so that's not really a fair comparison). I wouldn't hesitate to order these treats again for my pups.

Lab tested. Lab approved. WAY too expensive.
Size: 3.8 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: Sweet Potato, Ring
My dog likes these. But they don't really last all that long. And the package only included 5-6 rings. So that's an expensive treat, when I can get a bag of 40 dental treats (5" sticks) for the same price. Would I buy these again? No

Small ingredient list -- BIG taste!
Size: 3.8 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: Sweet Potato, Ring
This snack is tasty, given its simple formula of sweet potatoes, turkey, coconut, and soy protein isolate. The bag arrived at the house, and the girls were instantly ready for the latest and newest snack. There were four treats total in my bag - one for each baby. The smallest one (20 lbs), ironically, disappeared her treat faster than her three larger siblings (40 lbs). The bigger dogs savored their treats with smelling, licking, tasting, and chomping with elation on these tasty new treats. These chewies satisfy your girls between meals, which I noticed by them not bugging me for food hours before dinner. These seemed to do the trick and hold them over. A great appetizer, in my opinion.

My dog absolutely loves these treats
Size: 3.8 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: Sweet Potato, Ring
These turkey + sweet potato treats are a hit with my dog. Likes: - Good size. Substantial enough to be classified as a "special treat". - Good ingredients and nutrition. - Zero issues with digestion. - Arrived fresh and in great condition. - Good value. Dislikes: - Like most treats, they don't last that long. They are no bully stick--they go faster. Overall my dog loves these treats!
