Online Mosaic Planter Workshop with Jane du Rand
10–4:30pm Saturday 22 August & Sunday 23 August 2026

Get lost in the mesmorising world of mosaics: join Jane du Rand live online over a full weekend in August and learn from an internationally renowned artist to make a mosaic pot featuring hand-made ceramic reliefs.

One of our most popular workshops of all time is going live online! Mosaics are an ancient art form that never gets old. Whether you're a beginner or advanced student, these planters are fun to make and oh-so-satisfying to have on display or give to someone special (if you can part with it!).

Mosaics uses small pieces of tiles, glass or stone to produce intricately patterned designs and are the ideal art medium for planters due to their exciting colours, dynamic patterns, and hard-wearing finishes. Jane du Rand combines traditional mosaic methods with hand-made ceramic sculptures to create a unique, three-dimensional finish to her art. Jane’s ceramic mosaic planters are housed in private art collections all over the world, and her stunning work "Thriving: Brisbane Bush Turkey" (pictured) is now part in the Museum of Brisbane's permanent art collection.

In this special workshop held online via webinar over two days, you will learn from Jane du Rand to design and create a mosaic planter featuring handmade ceramic reliefs. You will receive a workshop kit ahead of the workshop with all the materials to make your planter (or collect it from Plant Empire), and your finished piece at the end of the workshop will be a beautiful and unique piece of art for your home or garden. You will leave this workshop with all the skills and training you need to continue your mosaic journey independently.

Don't underestimate how much work goes into making these beauties! The pots shown in the images below range in size from 100–150cm in height and feature both ceramic reliefs and one-off sculptures of plants and birds, with each work taking many weeks or months to make. The pots that we'll be making in this workshop will be approximately 30–40cm in height and feature ceramic reliefs (supplied by Jane) and will take us a full two days to mosaic from start-to-end.

The workshop begins with a session on design in order to create a plan for the composition, tile choices and overall colour scheme for your work. This is a very important part of the process and will ensure an easier execution process and a more successful outcome. You will learn about the tools and materials that Jane uses in her mosaic art, along with techniques for cutting mosaic tiles to create different design effects. You'll then be let loose to crack tiles and attack your planter through to completion (with the necessary safety training and under Jane's close guidance, of course!).

The workshop will end with a demonstration of how to grout and clean mosaics and you will receive a kit as part of your workshop kit with all the materials you need to grout and clean up your work. Your mosaics will need a few days to dry before it can be grouted and another day before it can be cleaned, so you can either complete this final step in your own time or log back in the following weekend to grout your work with Jane's help.

Who Should Attend?

All levels of experience are welcome: this workshop is suitable for beginners or advanced students.

Materials and Collection

All materials and equipment to make your mosaic planter will be supplied as part of a kit that we will post to you ahead of the workshop (or which you can collect in person from Plant Empire), including ceramic reliefs, mosaic tiles, and the planter that forms the foundation for your mosaic art. Please wear closed shoes and an apron if you are worried about staining your clothes.

How to Join?

You will receive a link from Plant Empire via email in the week prior to the workshop with instructions on how to login to the workshop webinar online. This is a live event with no recording. To ensure the best experience for attendees, places will be strictly limited for this event, so register early to ensure you have a seat in the workshop.

I bought this toy may 2025 it is now January 2026 I am finally having to replace . I have a chessie , almost 2 yo he is not an insane chewer but he does make the fabric “ tuff toys” look like a joke . Those are gone in ten minutes . This one last and last and last . It’s a great buy. In process of ordering my third one decided to write a review. I never write reviews . Such a simple product but worth every penny . My dogs favorite toy . Will stay in the arsenal .

Not recommended at all for heavy chewers
Size: Large (5" x 3.25" x 9"), Size: Large (5" x 3.25" x 9")
They advertise this toy as a heavy chewer toy and it’s not. My big dog chewed through it in a couple days and that’s with me yelling at him to chew it gently. I like the toy and it’s great for smaller less advid chewers. I put kibble in the holes and watch my Shiba go to town throwing it around but my mixed lab/dane has a nub of rubber left. So maybe don’t advertise it as a heavy chewer toy. The rubber is way too soft for you to be suggesting that. It did come with a strong chemical smell that my dogs didn’t like and I had to wash it 3x before they’d touch it.

Great value, durable, enriching
Size: Large (5" x 3.25" x 9")
$5 for the large size for our 15lb chiweenie mix was PERFECT. Her emotional support chew toy got destroyed and I wanted something I felt safe leaving in her kennel while I was out. She anxiously chews. Bought this to try out and she took a bit to get into it, but now she loves it. Probably could’ve gone with a smaller size, but oh well. We put treats inside and smear peanut butter or wet food on the dumbbell like ends for enrichment. So far has held up over 3 weeks.

A good choice
Size: Large (5" x 3.25" x 9")
Initially I put this toy in my save-for-later on Amazon. As I was perusing through one morning I noticed that it had been reduced so, I ordered it. It arrived promptly, was well packaged, and has been a good addition to my Doberman's toy box. It has not been chosen as the ultimate favorite, but he likes enough to select it, carry it around, and chew on it. To us there is no unpleasant odor. It is good solid rubber and despite all of his chewing maneuvers, there are not holes, marks, or bits of the ball where they should not be. He carries the toy in his mouth in the middle of the toy, but likes to lie on the floor, hold one ball end in his paws and chew on the other. Overall, I would give this a grade of a good, solid, reliable dog toy. I cannot address suction power, because I am not sure what is meant by that in a toy that is shaped like an old fashioned dumb bell. Top 3 Likes: -Durable rubber chew toy for large dog that is easily carried -Bright color making it easily visible -No offensive odors Top 3 Dislikes: -Serviceable toy, not a favorite -Could be chewed into little pieces by a very aggressive chewer (mine is not) -Poor at dispensing treats; they fall right out with no challenge
