The powerful account of the remarkable peace activist kidnapped while leading a peace delegation and held for ransom by Iraqi insurgents until his paradoxical release by a crack unit of special forces commandos.

In November 2005, James Loney and three other men — Canadian Harmeet Singh Sooden, British citizen Norman Kember and American Tom Fox — were taken hostage at gunpoint. The men were with Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT), an organization that places teams trained in non-violent intervention into lethal conflict zones. The then unknown Swords of Righteousness Brigade released videos of the men, resulting in what is likely the most publicized kidnapping of the Iraq War. Tom Fox was murdered and dumped on a Baghdad street. The surviving men were held for 118 days before being rescued by Task Force Black, an elite counter-kidnap unit led by the British SAS. Captivity is the story of what Jim described upon his return to Toronto and reunion with his partner Dan Hunt as "a terrifying, profound, transformative and excruciatingly boring experience." It presents an affecting portrait of how Jim came to be a pacifist and chronicles his work in Iraq before the kidnapping. It brings the reader immediately into the terror and banality, the frictions, the moral dilemmas of their captivity, their search to find their captors' humanity, and the imperative need to conceal Jim's sexual identity. It examines the paradoxes we face when our most cherished principles are tested in extraordinary circumstances and explores the universal truths contained in every captivity experience. At its heart, the book is a hope-filled plea for peace, human solidarity and forgiveness.

From James Loney:

Why I Wrote This Book

I often wondered, during those excruciating days of handcuffs and chains, fear and boredom without end, would I ever get to tell anyone about the strange and bizarre things that happened during our captivity? Being transported in the trunk of a car. Sleeping with my left and right hands handcuffed to the person beside me. Explaining to the captors how to use “men’s gel.” Picking open our handcuffs after watching a Hollywood movie.

It is a paradox. I went to Iraq as a pacifi st on a mission of peace and was kidnapped, threatened with death and held hostage with three other men until we were rescued in a military operation. It is an extraordinary privilege to be able to tell the story of this paradox, to explain why I remain committed to the principles of nonviolence despite the fact a member of our group was murdered and our freedom was secured by armed force. The crucible of captivity was a kind of school in which I was able to see the innermost workings of the universe, how we are all connected, how our liberation is inextricably tied together. I want to share this story in the hope of contributing to the emergence of a world without war, the single greatest challenge of the 21st century. Everything depends on this, for without peace nothing else is possible.

Nice beach shirt for senior portraits
Color: Light Green, Size: X-Large
I wanted some beachy vibe pictures for my son's senior portraits. He's taken up surfing lately, so I wanted to get a few shots of him at the beach, but I wanted his outfit to work with the scenery. I saw this shirt and I thought he would look good in it. This shirt is really nice on him. It fits his big shoulders well and accentuates his V shape. It's not too form fitting, but definitely doesn't look frumpy. It's soft and light and the sage green looks so good against his golden olive skin. The only qualm I have with it is how much it wrinkles. I know it's a linen blend and they always wrinkle, but I had to make sure he changed at the beach as not to go out with a ton of wrinkles. It's a material problem, not specific to this shirt...but annoying. The shirt launders really well with only a little shrinkage...it made it fit better on him in my opinion. Just make sure to take it out of the dryer promptly and hang it up.

LOVE these shirts, came back and bought more!
These shirts look SO good. I am a senior manager in a large corporation so have to dress nice every day. I loved the first one of these shirts so much I came back and have now bought 15 of them in different colors. Basically, these are now all I wear. Buy yourself 15 bamboo undershirts with the V neck (you don't want the layered look with dress shirts, you want the V neck so you can't see the undershirt), half in white and half in black to wear under these and you are set. GUYS.....WHEN YOU FIRST BUY THESE YOU MUST IRON THEM. I see the pics of people wearing them here, and you can still see the fold lines from being packaged and that looks terrible. Washing alone won't get rid of the fold lines. Get your iron and set it for POLYESTER which is a lower heat setting. If you set it hot, it will melt the shirt. But set it for polyester and the lines iron out VERY easily and fast. You only have to do this when you first buy them. I've never had to iron any of them again after the first time. They are very wrinkle resistant! I HATE my cotton dress shirts now. These Coofandy shirts STRETCH like crazy! You can bend and reach for things no problem. I'm able to wear all of these with Chinos, dress slacks AND jeans so they are incredibly versitile! My wife and my girlfriend both (joking!) love how soft the shirt feels on me. I have to wear these shirts every day and own enough so I can do laundry once every other week and so far all the shirts have been very durable with no tears, rips, any problems at all. They all still look new.

Must iron first before wearing. Then wrinkle free.
The fit is perfect. The material is quite nice. The only problem would be they are hard to de-wrinkle from original packaging. I’ve washed my shirt several times and it’s still showing the creases. The only way to get rid of them is to launder them or iron them. I think once this occurs, they remain wrinkle free for a while. This is the third of the exact same shirt I got in different colors.
