After stepping away from the limelight in the early 1970s, Gill re-emerged triumphantly in the 1990s. Described as a pioneer in the pop art movement, Gill’s works are visionary, timeless and universal. His iconic vibrant separations of light and shadow – typic of news photographs - are inspired by magazines like Time, Life and National Geographic and have been featured in numerous galleries.

Gill was one of the first artists to paint Marilyn Monroe, depicting the story of her life in his iconic ‘Marilyn Triptych’ shortly after her death. Following the success of his triptych, which remains part of the Museum of Modern Art’s (New York) permanent collection, Gill became drawn to Marilyn Monroe as a prevalent theme in his work.

The original artworks are modern embodiments of an idea that was ahead of its time. These modern pieces are steeped in the history of the pop art movement and bring a fresh and exciting insight into the workings of one of the last living pioneers of the subject.

Described by the late scholar William Seitz as an ‘incisive and startling commentator’ who art is ‘timeless and universal’, he merges iconography with startling colour.

Thorough But Easily Read Historical Account
Format: Paperback
I bought this book thinking it would be an account of civilian life in the U.S. during WWII. But I was surprised to see that it focused almost exclusively on the military campaigns and the decisions behind them. There was sporadic mention of life on the homefront, but mostly the book is a book about the war. Which is not a criticism. Kennedy deftly and thoroughly takes us through the war, outlines for us the challenges and opportunities and how the leaders of the affected nations developed their strategies. In addtion to the fine details of history, Kennedy writes in such a fashion that this book will probably appeal to the scholar and the layman with equal strength. As someone long in the tooth, I knew most of the history of WWII, but if you are younger and want a comprehensive, well-written history an epic period in world history, you could do a lot worse than read this compelling book.

Scholarly and Readable, Too
Format: Paperback
I read the first volume in this series (about the Great Depression), and now I'm in the midst of this one. Kennedy's very-lucid prose keeps the reader moving along, and of course, the sweep of the story he's telling is nearly-irresistible. But in lamer hands, the prose might well have bogged down in turgidity--not so in this case!
