Handmade Momigami Paper Lamp

We are delighted to introduce our customers to this new, young and talented designer and his wonderful lamps, lovingly crafted using age-old Japanese techniques.

In Japanese, the term "momigami" translates to "kneaded paper," a technique that transforms ordinary paper into a resilient and much stronger material through the application of Devil's Tongue Root and hand kneading. The wrinkled, crumpled texture created by the momigami technique adds a unique tactibility, almost resembling leather. (In Japan and Korea, paper is viewed very differently than it is seen in the west - not as a disposable and fragile material but as a highly useful one - and is even crafted into a particular kind of clothing called kamiko, a slowly fading art form which involves the fusing, stitching or folding together of sheets of Japanese paper.)

The paper used for these lamps is handmade Japanese Kozo, produced from sustainably harvested mulberry bark, which does not require killing the plant to harvest. This quality paper allows the light to perfectly diffuse through, surrounding the structure in a soft glow that hides the light source within. The frame is made of blackened steel which is hand bent and welded to create a shape that allows light through both the shade and base with minimal shadowing, a feature that sets this lamp apart from others.

The lamps are handmade in all respects.  Of course, due to their handmade and artisan nature, slight differences in symmetry, colour and texture will appear but this only adds to their unique qualities... no two lamps will ever be the same, each one will be beautifully different!

The lamps are available in ivory or various colours (all dyed using natural materials such the lamp here where the paper has been dyed using the bark of ancient oak trees, often over 500 years old, that have died naturally). The intricate and natural dye process, refined through extensive trial and error, results in the unique and subtle colours currently available - with more in development.

Currently two sizes are available as standard, however if you have a particular size/shape/colour in mind bespoke lamps can be made, just speak to the maker!
