Beck-Ola is the second studio album from British guitarist Jeff Beck and the first to be credited to the Jeff Beck Group. Released in June 1969 in the US and later that summer in the UK, the album built on the blues-rock foundation of its predecessor Truth while pushing into heavier, more aggressive territory. The lineup featured vocalist Rod Stewart, bassist Ronnie Wood, pianist Nicky Hopkins, and new drummer Tony Newman, whose harder-hitting style matched Beck’s evolving musical vision.
Recorded over six sessions in April 1969, Beck-Ola mixes high-energy originals with spirited covers of Elvis Presley’s “All Shook Up” and “Jailhouse Rock.” Hopkins contributes the melodic instrumental “Girl from Mill Valley,” while the album concludes with the explosive “Rice Pudding,” an instrumental that cuts off mid-phrase, adding to the record’s raw and unpredictable feel.
The album's title riffs on the name of the Rock-Ola jukebox company, and the cover art features René Magritte’s surrealist painting The Listening Room, underscoring the band's unconventional edge. Despite internal tensions that would soon break the group apart, Beck-Ola was a commercial success, reaching number 15 on the Billboard 200 and number 39 in the UK.
Though the Jeff Beck Group disbanded shortly after its release, Beck-Ola remains a key document of late 60s heavy blues rock, capturing the brief but potent chemistry between Beck, Stewart, and Wood before they moved on to other defining projects.
