23–30 October 2026 

Jane du Rand will lead a 7-day intensive ceramic and mosaic experience in 2026 to fully immerse you in the world of ceramic and mosaic art.

You will learn from Australia’s leading ceramic and mosaic artist to design, create and install a large-scale mural from start to finish. This masterclass builds on the success of previous Jane du Rand Masterclasses held at Plant Empire in Brisbane and interstate, and is not to be missed.

You need not be a master to attend this course, but you will have a strong appetite to live and breathe your art intensively for a full week in order to achieve a rapid progression to take your skills to the next level. This masterclass is suitable for practising and professional artists, as well as developing artists with minimal ceramics and/or mosaic experience. You will leave this course with the knowledge and skills to bring your creative ideas to life for your home, friends or family, and the confidence to plan, design and develop large-scale art installations. 

Students will experience a multi-dimensional art program involving a range of technical, creative and cultural experiences. We will work together as a group and individually to understand and practise:

• designing and setting out a large scale artwork, looking at a client’s brief and the translation of the design into ceramics and mosaics. 
• sculpting ceramic pieces, including mould making, glazing and firing. 
• cutting and placing mosaics looking at choosing colours, shapes, glass mosaics, ceramic tiles and smalti.
• installing the work, learning about the installation process, including grouting, finishing off and cleaning the final artwork.
  

Your week will include valuable walks in nature and visits to inspect completed ceramic and mosaic installations, allowing opportunities for rejuvenation, inspiration and research. In addition to learning how to create a large-scale public art installation, you will take home with you a number of moulds and ceramic pieces that you made during the week.

Location

Plant Empire has moved! This workshop will be held at our new premises in Tennyson, Brisbane: 15/55 Lofter St, Tennyson Q 4105.

Accessibility

In our new premises, we have ground floor workshop spaces as well as mezzanine level spaces with stairs. The ground floor spaces are all level without any steps, while the mezzanines are accessible via a staircase with 22 steps and 1–2 landings. Please let us know if you have any mobility issues that would limit your access to the mezzanine spaces so that we can ensure that your workshop is located at ground level by adding a note in the special instructions field when you register for your workshop: for example, "no stairs" or similar.

If you need to cancel your place up to 7 days before the course, we will provide you with a voucher that you can use to attend future workshops or any other purchase at Plant Empire. We regret that we are unable to provide vouchers for cancellations made within 7 days of the course.
