The album, predominantly crafted by Keith Crouch, weaves through a diverse array of contemporary genres such as hip-hop, pop-soul, and R&B. In collaboration with Crouch, Brandy Norwood enlisted the creative prowess of various writers and producers including the R&B ensemble Somethin' for the People, Arvel McClinton, Damon Thomas, and Kenneth Crouch, Keith’s brother.

Upon its release, the album was met with a favourable reception from music critics, with praise directed at Norwood's fresh appearance and the enduring charm of the album. Although its sales trajectory started on a slower note, the album climbed to number 20 on the US Billboard 200 and achieved a quadruple platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), with over two million units sold domestically. Globally, the album boasts over 6 million copies sold.

From the album, four singles made their debut. "I Wanna Be Down," the lead single, soared to number six on the US Billboard Hot 100, earning critical acclaim and recognition as a standout track. Following this, "Baby", the second single, garnered positive reception and ascended to number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The subsequent singles, "Best Friend" and "Brokenhearted," secured spots at numbers 34 and nine on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. The album and its singles earned Norwood nominations for several prestigious awards, including two Grammy Award nominations. This album’s success established Brandy as a formidable presence within the new wave of R&B female vocalists that emerged in the mid-to-late 1990s.
