Guy Maddin’s surreal, dreamlike films are often cited for their striking visual collisions, inharmonious juxtapositions and at times playful humour. Titled “Cramps”, the image depicts several cropped figures in what seems defensive and aggressive manoeuvres. The central character protecting himself from against two eye-stabbing fingers and a wack on the head alla the three stooges. This is casted again blood red O’Keefe floral painterly image. The piece is a paper collage treatment of his films. Like his often disorienting and absurd moving images, Maddin brings together disparate loose ends, leaving the viewer to draw their own interpretation.

Guy Maddin is a celebrated Canadian filmmaker, artist and writer, born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His filmic output is a remarkable canon of fantasia that includes eleven feature-length projects and innumerable shorts. Maddin has won numerous awards, including the US National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Experimental Film twice, for Archangel (1990), and Heart of the World (2000), and an Emmy Award for Best Performing Arts for Dracula: Pages from a Virgin’s Diary. Maddin is a member of The Order of Canada and The Order of Manitoba.
