Reno Abellira had shaped a few boards for the Lorne surf shop when he was in Vic for the 1977 bells contest. I walked into the shop some time after and saw the 6’11 swallowtail sitting in the racks and immediately bought it. The Reno was one of my all time favourite boards, but had some aspects I wanted to adjust, especially the nose rocker as it was just a bit too flat. Furthering that, I’ve refined and changed that board over many years by increasing the entry rocker, adding a modern bottom and rails whilst trying to maintain the original plan shape.

Typically, surfboards are an ever developing process. I’ve always described shaping as part art, part craft and part science.
