"Fascinating...The great strength of this memoir is its voracious, humble curiosity." - The Atlantic, The 10 Best Books of the Year
A witty, winning, and revelatory personal narrative of the author’s transition from sightedness to blindness and his quest to learn about blindness as a rich culture all its own.
We meet Andrew Leland as he’s suspended in the liminal state of the soon-to-be blind: he’s midway through his life with retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that ushers those who live with it from sightedness to blindness over years, even decades. He grew up with full vision, but starting in his teenage years, his sight began to degrade from the outside in. Soon— but without knowing exactly when—he will likely have no vision left.
Full of apprehension but also dogged curiosity, Leland embarks on a sweeping exploration of the state of being that awaits him: not only the physical experience of blindness but also its language, politics, and customs. He negotiates his changing relationships with his wife and son, and with his own sense of self, as he moves from his mainstream, “typical” life to one with a disability. Part memoir, part historical and cultural investigation, The Country of the Blind represents Leland’s determination not to merely survive this transition but to grow from it—to seek out and revel in that which makes blindness enlightening. Brimming with warmth and humor, it is an exhilarating tour of a new way of being.

Accurate
Color: Stainless Steel, Size: Medium Size
Just place it on the counter, press the power button, and you’re ready to weigh ingredients instantly. The digital display is clear and easy to read, and switching between grams and ounces is fast and intuitive which makes it great whether I’m following recipes or tracking portions for meal planning.
The weighing platform is spacious enough to fit bowls, plates, or containers and the scale is impressively accurate even with small amounts like spices or coffee grounds. I’ve used it for baking precise measurements, prepping meal portions for a keto plan, and tracking food for weight‑loss goals, and it performs consistently every time.
It also has useful features like a tare function which lets you subtract the weight of your container so you only measure what matters. The scale feels sturdy and well‑made yet still lightweight and easy to store when not in use.
Overall this Etekcity food scale is a fantastic value and a must‑have for anyone serious about cooking, baking, or healthy living. I’ll definitely be using it for years and would buy it again without hesitation.

Great Kitchen Purchase
Color: Stainless Steel, Size: Medium Size, Color: Stainless Steel, Size: Medium Size
I didn’t realize how much I needed a kitchen scale until I got this. It’s really accurate and makes cooking (especially baking) so much easier and more consistent.
The tare function is a game changer—you can zero out the bowl and keep adding ingredients without extra measuring cups. It’s also easy to switch between grams and ounces, which is great for following different recipes. Most digital scales measure very precisely, often down to about 1 gram, which makes a big difference for accuracy.
It’s compact, easy to clean, and doesn’t take up much space on the counter. Overall, such a simple tool but makes a big difference—definitely worth having in any kitchen.
