A generous collection of classic Decca stereo recordings, illuminating the idiomatic sympathy of the Swiss conductor Ernest Ansermet for ballet music and specifically the scores commissioned by Serge Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes. The Eloquence label has undertaken a thorough-going re-examination of the recorded legacy of Ernest Ansermet, including reissues of repertoire with which he is no longer associated such as symphonies by Schumann (4800078), Sibelius (48000044) and Prokofiev (4800834). His Beethoven (4800391) has always been admired for it's thrilling energy and sure sense of direction; nevertheless, it was on the music of French, and French-accented Russian composers, that his reputation was most securely founded. A 4CD set has already catalogued his first recordings of important works by Stravinsky (4803775) along with his mono recordings of Debussy (4800127) and Ravel (4428321). Now for the first time his later stereo recordings of Diaghilev ballets are brought together on a generously filled 2CD set including the Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, Jeux, Daphnis et Chloé, La Valse, a complete Pulcinella and Les Noces (sung in French with a Swiss-French cast). A new booklet appreciation by François Hudry places into context Ansermet's special understanding and inside knowledge of these scores and the Parisian milieu from which they sprang. Indeed, he had vivid memories of conducting the company on a tour of the US, including 105 performances in 105 days. In 1909, when still a young man, Ansermet wrote that 'Debussy's work seems to me the most important musical phenomenon since Wagner and the Russians... His influence is neither to be wished nor feared, it cannot be avoided.' Together with Ravel and Stravinsky, Debussy was the composer Ansermet conducted most, and he took their music all over the world. La valse in particular became a calling-card: In 1921, after listening to Ansermet conduct the work, Ravel immediately wrote to him: 'You understand La valse perfectly. I have never been able to obtain such rhythmic suppleness in Paris.'

very useful details, and some humor
If you're going to hike the WL this is the book to get. Lots of very, very useful details, and some humor. She really understands trail hiking. Hint: to save weight download it to a Kindle. (I'm not really an Amazon employee!). Then, read the information about the section you will be hiking next in the evening before or first thing while you're eating your oatmeal. ps: The WL trail is challenging but incredibly worth it. Get the book but more important, hike the trail.

A heartfelt, inspiring travelogue and meditation on living well
Format: Hardcover
Gordon Bernhardt's Buen Camino is a great accomplishment and a thoroughly enjoyable and thought-provoking read. Gordon opens his generous heart and extraordinary life to his readers and takes us with him, winding through a fascinating, historically informed and personally reflective commentary on the places and people of this ancient journey, his own life, memories, fears, triumphs, his personal commitment to service and growth in his life's work, and his connections with a remarkable community of fellow travelers on the road. The many photographs and questions for personal reflection at the end of each chapter were very effective. I was left with a desire to someday walk this path myself, and with a great appreciation and admiration for Gordon's persistence and positivity, both in making this journey and in his life and work.

A Heartfelt Story to Help Us Embrace Our Personal Journeys
Format: Kindle
“Buen Camino: What a Hike Through Spain Taught Me about Investing and Life” is a heartfelt story by author Gordon Bernhardt about his adventure traveling the Camino de Santiago beginning in France and ending in Spain. It is much more than a travelogue; it is a journey into life lessons both in Gordon’s personal life but also in his professional life. He includes deep revelations, humor, and puts readers in the setting of the pilgrimage through his words and images. I highly recommend this positive book reminding readers to enjoy our moments, appreciate our fellowship with other humans, and embrace our personal journeys.

An inspiring book on the uplifting qualities of the Camino pilgrimage
Format: Kindle, Format: Kindle
I highly recommend the book, “Buen Camino”, written by Gordon J. Bernhardt. It is focused on his 2018, 35-day pilgrimage/trek called the Camino de Santiago, or The Way of Saint James. The walk starts in the Pyrennes at St Jean Pied de Port in France and ends at the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in northern Spain, then to the coastal towns of Muxia and Finisterre, 618 miles later. Gordon shares what the pilgrimage meant to him as a way to reset his life, his interaction with the pilgrims along the way and the life lessons learned, how to handle unexpected problems and opportunities, and the importance of stepping away from our busy lives to help us focus on the true priorities. He blends his experience on the Camino with his profession in wealth management, and how helping/interacting with people in his personal, professional, and spiritual life has enriched his existence. After reading this book, you will walk (pardon the pun) with a different view of what is truly important in your life.
