From the list of suggested clothing items in a Handbooks for Intending Emigrants - 12 calico chemises for ladies and 6 pairs of Worsted stockings for men. Not to mention - waistcoats, jackets and caps. What you brought and how you dressed varied according to your standing in society. So 'gentlemen' were advised to bring with them 72 Calico shirts with Dress fronts whilst ladies would need 12 pairs of white kid gloves. Of course, it's easy to have a chuckle at these things, but life was tough back then - and this book makes that quite clear. Interesting stuff.
