The Great Escape is the fourth studio album by Blur, released on September 11 1995 by Food Records and Virgin Records. Issued during the height of Britpop, the album followed Modern Life Is Rubbish and Parklife and continued the band’s commercial momentum in the United Kingdom and Europe. It debuted at number one on the United Kingdom Albums Chart and was certified triple platinum in the United Kingdom within a year of release.

The album produced several successful singles, including “Country House,” “The Universal,” “Stereotypes,” and “Charmless Man,” all of which reached the United Kingdom top ten. “Country House” became Blur’s first number one single and was released during a widely publicized chart competition with Oasis.

The Great Escape is often regarded as the final album in Blur’s Britpop focused period before the band shifted direction on their 1997 self titled release. It will be reissued in December 2025 as a two disc vinyl edition to mark its thirtieth anniversary, featuring new cover artwork by Tony Hung.
