The new 9000 series builds upon its success and precedents of the 8000, 8200, and 8300 series, expanding and incorporating the same award-winning concept into more models. This expansion aims to appeal to a wider audience and deliver its benefits to more extensive audio systems and solutions with the new 9000Q preamplifier and 9000P power amplifier.
The 9000Q follows the smart aesthetic of the series - solidly built and impeccably finished. To the untrained eye, it bears a striking resemblance to the 9000N with dual rotary controllers and the same acclaimed 4.3” colour TFT screen.

Design and Build

As a new dedicated Preamplifier solution, the 9000Q is far more than a trimmed down version of the 9000A integrated amplifier. It’s a beast of a Pre! Designed by Jan Ertner, the lead designer in the 9000 series components (as well as many other Audiolab components over the years), the 9000Q is a design enhanced dedicated preamplifier that can be described as greatness improved.

Starting with the much complemented DAC section, the Audiolab 9000Q has an improved implementation of the ES9038PRO DAC chip. Building on the years of experience, and class-leading adoption of ESS DAC chipets, the 9000Q employs the eight-channel 9038PRO DAC chip, the highest standard in the current Sabre range. This is accompanied by proprietary circuitry to make the most of the chip’s HyperStream II architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator technology for unprecedented dynamic range and ultra-low distortion, making it the perfect preamplifier interface for high-resolution digital audio files (and audiophiles!).

In detaching the ‘pre’ concept from the integrated amplifier solution, the 9000Q is allowed to further improve as adedicated preamplifier and this extends to an enhanced enhanced MM Phono input featuring a new single stage Class-A circuit, which would make the 9000Q an exceptional phono stage alone.

Tone Controls and Inputs

The 9000Q also uses a new, custom-specified transformer. Engineered as an improvement over the 9000A due to a preamplifier requiring delivering current when demanded, and with all the Audiolab know-how, it enables a controlled performance with all the crisp detail and Audiolab sound signature.

A step forward over the already impressive 9000A ‘Pre’ performance, the Audiolab 9000Q incorporates new tone controls for treble and bass adjustment, accessible via the menu, and with a range of +/-6dB in 2dB steps. This allows delicate fine-tuning to suit room performance, speaker or power amplifier capabilities or even just personal preference.

Designed to be the dedicated management of a multi-source, multi-format, hi-fi system, the 9000Q accommodates a multitude of inputs. It caters for analogue and digital sources with 3 x line level AUX inputs, a balanced XLR stereo pair, a dedicated phono input for the aforementioned dedicated phono preamplifier, as well as 2 x COAX (S/PDIF up to192kHz 24Bit), 2 x Optical (S/PDIF up to 192kHz 24Bit), a Bluetooth 5.1 receiver and a PC USB input.

Across these inputs, the preamplifier comes to shine.

The 9000Q provides a fixed level AUX output, and three variable Pre outputs ( 2 x RCA, 1 x XLR). The three variable outputs are isolated and can be used simultaneously without any impact on performance.

With additional features such as a source configuration option that allows for the fully balanced stereo XLR signal path. A direct path from input to output only passing through the 4-channel analogue Volume Control.

AUX 3 can also be set to “AV Direct”. This allows connection from an external pre-output or AV processor with its own volume control.

And let’s not forget the dedicated headphone amplifier section which employs current-feedback circuitry with wide bandwidth and high slew rate; the 9000Q ensures a dynamic, detailed and engaging performance with all manner of headphone types, with that extra added audiolab sparkle from the consistent signal integrity from all inputs.

Two 12V Trigger Outputs allow for control of external devices, such as the 9000CDT and 9000N. The new 9000P stereo power amplifier is the perfect companion in stereo or dual bridged mono configurations.

As with the 9000 series standard, the 9000Q uses the same 4.3” full colour TFT display to offer access to a wealth of setting, functions and information via incredibly functional General User Interface. Not only displaying level, input, file format and signal information, it gives access to the amp’s menu system, which includes such options as digital upsampling, input sensitivity adjustment, balance control, automatic standby switching, and volume curtailment when the amp is powered up. It can even be set to display a VU meter in ‘analogue’ or ‘digital’ form, showing real-time decibel levels for the left and right channels – a satisfying graphical representation of the music as it plays. And it can be dimmed or turned off completely, as the user prefers.

All-in-all, the 9000Q raises the bar for preamplifiers within its price category and the 9000 series strides forward as the series to beat – in terms of specification, price, performance with intrinsic detail and unarguable quality.

Can't do Without

I have been a fan of Gesenius for a long time. While I knew there was updated information to consider, I thought his text was enough. But although his text is certainly still necessary, and necessarily covers issues that the book reviewed here does not, it is clear that one must turn to Waltke & O'Connor to reach a greater level of accuracy. Writing so long after Gesenius, they have presented new and accurate information based on the latest research, not only of Ancient Hebrew, but also based on cognate Semitic languages. I have found the sections on Hebrew verbs the most enlightening and correcting, e.g., that the Pi'el stem is NOT intensive. Such intenseness must be detected from a combination of the lexical verb meaning, the stem, and the text/co-text. This book also presents other up-to-date information on the forming of nouns from verbs, etc. As others have noted, the layout and presentation is great. It really can't be presented any easier, I don't think. One must read Gesenius, for he presents very important information across the board, including much on phonology and linguistics not covered by Waltke & O'Connor. But to stick with Gesenius will leave one in error on some points. Waltke & O'Connor, simply put, make the corrections and make studying Biblical Hebrew exciting, and even much easier to learn.

Best Of The Best
Format: Hardcover
This is the best book I've ever yet read on Hebrew Syntax as was used in the Tanakh. You can't go wrong with this, even though at times, the English-language linguistical jargon may give you a headache, the authors were quick to point out that Hebrew cannot really be clearly defined with English Grammar terminology. But it's format is easy on the eyes. You will often find yourself flipping back a page or two at a list or chart, for whatever they're explaining, but I don't understand how you could have a problem with that. I first saw this at the Portland City Library in PDX, Oregon, and vowed to myself I was going to buy it, no matter what the cost. It's worth it's weight in pure platinum..!

Hard to Beat

Waltke's grammar is about as good as it gets with Hebrew Grammars. Considering the subject matter and its scope one has to expect a monolith like this 700pg jumbo sized monster. But this isn't just some pedantic and wordy school book, it is accessible (assuming that the reader has a basic understanding of Hebrew already), rich with Biblical examples, and comprehensive (at least as far as a grammar can be). This book has set a standard for Hebrew Grammars and is a must for the serious Hebrew student.

In Kathy Koch’s Words, “To get something new, you must do something new.”
Format: Paperback
Dr. Kathy out did herself with this one. I finished the book with hope, ideas, and actionable steps, to use in my relationships with my adult children. She repeats this phrase throughout her book, “To get something new, you must do something new.” I like this so much more than the definition of insanity, “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results," (not sure who said it first and it is not my definition). I am a creature of habit and do the same things and can be amazed when nothing changes. But as Dr. Kathy states I have to do something new, and this book gives me that new. Every chapter ends with 5 actionable steps, and guided activities to apply what was discussed. Some steps are even scripted to help when you don’t know what to say. I have 13 children. 6 have reached adulthood. 4 of them are married and we have 10 amazing grandchildren. Navigating relationships with the adult kids sometimes feels like a roller coaster ride. I can be passive aggressive and opinionated. I know better, but bad habits are hard to break. When I got the email that this book was about to be published and Dr. Kathy was looking for some to read and give an honest opinion of it, I jumped at the chance. I received a free digital copy, and as soon as it was available I bought it. I highly recommend this book. It was written to help with adult kids, but you can apply the ideas with communicating with any adults or even kids. Chapter 1 “First, The Basics” as our children become adults we are their parents (noun), but are no longer to parent (verb). Our role switches to encourager, guide, counselor, coach based on mutual trust. She reminds us that our purpose is more than just parenting. She discusses the 5 core needs of security, identity, belonging, purpose, and competence. She even gives a scripted Declaration of Release returning our children into the hands of an all powerful God. Chapter 2 “Look Honestly at Yourself” Dr. Kathy hits hard here. She tells us to lose our pride, take responsibility for our part and be open to make changes. She also tells the reader to listen to learn and not to judge. This chapter gave me so much insight into my personal relationships. Reminded me that I get defensive because I don’t want to be criticized or blamed. She guides in ways to get to the bottom of hurts by asking questions and listening. Chapter 3 “Listen More, Talk Less” No unsolicited advice. Listen to understand. Ask questions to clarify, and ask permission before giving your two cents. Hear your children. Love them. Accept them. This doesn’t mean you like or approve their choices, just acknowledge it. Focus on the present. Facts. Surrender it all to God. Chapter 4 “How to Handle Grief So It Doesn’t Handle You” Acknowledge grief, give yourself time to accept and grieve. Grieve what isn’t and accept what is. Reject lies and embrace truth. Then work on what you can. Chapter 5 “The Two Shall Become One” has all the tips for when your adult child marries. How to handle traditions, holidays, etc. Chapter 6 “The Blessings of Grandchildren” has my next favorite quote. Dr. Kathy says, “Don’t judge past by today’s wisdom.” This gem is one I have repeatedly told myself since I finished reading the book. I did the best I could at that time. I have grown, matured, learned more, and am not the same person I was. She also says that God calls me to love others, not analyze and fix them. So now that the grandchildren are here I need to learn their 8 great smarts (word, logic, picture, music, body, nature, people, and self), be active and not idolize. Chapter 7 “Close or Far away” we need to respect their home and ways. Always ask to stop by and leave judgement at the door. Instead of walking in and feeling like you should do something, instead ask “What would you like me to do.” My job is to pray and serve. Chapter 8 “The Big Stuff:Moving Home and More” addresses the need for clear communication, clear expectations and respect. Chapter 9 “ Politics, Lifestyle, and Other Hot Topics” Bottom line is to be open and approachable. If a topic comes up that can’t be discussed peacefully it is ok to say no to discussing right then. Always be respectful and stay calm. Chapter 10 “The Prodigal” This one leans a lot into giving up our control and leaning into God’s sovereignty. Releasing. Grieving. Loving unconditionally. Being available to listen, but not quick to solve, and offer unsolicited advice. Chapter 11 “Finding Hope When Life Unravels” where does our hope come from? The Lord. We cannot live in past guilt and shame. Know you did the best you could. If you did wrong, take responsibility for it. Ultimately though it is all in His hands. Sometimes we have to get out of the way and let God work in our children’s lives. We can’t. But He can. Trust in His sovereignty.

A thoughtful and practical book, from an author we have trusted through all the stages of parenting!

When we started our family, we figured that the "hard years" would be the ones with night-time feedings, teething, potty training... As my mom later revealed, "little children, little problems...big kids, big problems." And now, as parents of 4 adults, our learning in this "parenting stage" continues, and we appreciate all the help we can get! (And we now have lots of grandkids...a whole new phase with a steep learning curve!) We met Dr Kathy years ago, at a homeschooling conference in Europe, and have closely followed her ever since. She was a huge help to our oldest who was struggling in the German school system. When we were asked if we would like an advance copy of her book about strategies as parents of adult children, we were very glad to say yes! We so appreciate her thoughtful, practical advice! This book is filled with both, and we plan to get a hard copy, to re-read and underline. And we are definitely glad to recommend it to friends in this stage of life, whether they have great relationships with their kids or ones with tough challenges.
