Founded by Clare Valley pioneer Jim Barry, this family-owned winery has played a vital role in establishing the region as a benchmark for world-class Riesling and premium Australian wines. Jim Barry was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley, and his legacy continues through three generations of family winemakers.
With a strong commitment to quality, innovation, and community, Jim Barry Wines is renowned for producing expressive, regionally distinct wines, particularly their iconic Rieslings and elegant reds. Today, the Barry family remains at the helm, proudly upholding their heritage and passion for the Clare Valley.
Inspired by a first taste of Assyrtiko on Santorini in 2006, we undertook a decade-long effort to introduce this remarkable Greek variety to Australia. With the support of leading Santorini producers, we imported twelve cuttings to Australia in 2008, nurtured them through quarantine, and grafted the first vines in the Clare Valley in 2011. Our inaugural micro-batch was produced in 2014, and further propagation has since expanded our plantings to 6.87 hectares across four Clare Valley sites.
Grown in both traditional kouloura baskets and on trellis, our Assyrtiko expresses the variety’s hallmark freshness, crisp acidity, and mineral drive while reflecting the cooler climate and soils of Clare. The result is an Australian Assyrtiko that echoes Santorini’s volcanic purity yet offers its own distinctive, terroir-driven character.
