Experience transformative network performance with the Extreme Networks 8520-48Y Ethernet Switch. Designed for data centers, high-performance computing clusters, and enterprise networks, this switch delivers dense 25G and 100G connectivity in a modular, rack-mountable chassis. The 8520-48Y scales alongside your organization, offering flexible uplink options, robust Layer 2 switching, and a modular architecture that accommodates future growth without replacing core hardware. With a practical 459 W power envelope, it balances power and efficiency while supporting both Optical Fiber and Twisted Pair media to cover a wide range of deployment scenarios—from campus cores to hyperscale workloads. In short, the 8520-48Y accelerates data transfer, reduces latency, and simplifies network design by consolidating high-speed storage, virtualization, and cloud workloads into a single, scalable platform.

  • Unleash dense bandwidth with 48 ports delivering 25GBase-T copper connections and 100GBase-X uplinks. This combination dramatically increases server-to-server and server-to-storage bandwidth, enabling rapid data movement for virtualization, containerized apps, AI workloads, and modern digital workloads. The result is lower latency, quicker backups, and smoother performance during peak traffic.
  • Modular, scalable design: The 8520-48Y uses a modular architecture that lets you adapt to evolving network requirements. You can add capacity as your organization grows without replacing the core switch, protecting your investment and minimizing downtime during upgrades.
  • Layer 2 efficiency with security: As a 2-Layer capable switch, it handles high-speed traffic within VLANs, supports segmentation, and enables advanced QoS and security features to protect critical data and ensure predictable performance for business-critical applications.
  • Power and efficiency: The switch consumes around 459 W under load, delivering a balance of performance and energy efficiency. This helps data centers manage cooling and power budgets while providing the throughput needed for modern workloads.
  • Media flexibility and deployment options: With support for Optical Fiber and Twisted Pair, you can tailor the 8520-48Y to your distance and cost constraints, enabling fiber uplinks for long-reach connections and copper for short, cost-effective server links.

how to install Extreme Networks 8520-48Y Ethernet Switch

Before installation, verify that your rack space can accommodate the switch’s footprint and weight, and ensure adequate cooling and airflow to sustain performance. The 8520-48Y is designed for rack mounting, so install the chassis securely in a suitable rack using the provided mounting hardware. Align the rails and fasten the unit to minimize vibration and ensure stable operation over time.

Power and initial setup come next. Connect the switch to a grounded power source using the appropriate power cables, and power on the device. Access the management interface through the console or the dedicated management port to begin configuration. It is recommended to perform a basic, controlled power-on self-test (POST) to verify hardware health before connecting other devices.

Physical connections should follow your network topology. Connect 25GBase-T devices and servers to the copper ports to handle high-speed access workloads, and link core or aggregation devices to the 100GBase-X uplinks for fast inter-switch communication and backbone connectivity. Use quality copper cables (Category 6a/7) for 25G connections and suitable fiber optic cables for 100G uplinks, ensuring proper shielding and connector standards for your environment.

Initial configuration is essential for stable operation. Access the switch’s management interface to assign a unique IP address, configure VLANs, and establish trunking or link aggregation as needed. Define basic security policies, enable any available access controls, and set up monitoring or SNMP parameters to track performance, errors, and utilization. If your environment requires network segmentation, implement VLANs and QoS policies to prioritize critical applications and storage traffic.

Validation and optimization follow. After the initial setup, perform connectivity tests between endpoint devices and the core, verify VLAN isolation and trunk links, and confirm that QoS rules reliably prioritise critical workloads. Check redundancy and failover paths if your topology supports them, and monitor power usage, temperature, and fan activity to maintain optimal operating conditions. Plan for firmware updates and routine maintenance windows to keep the switch secure and feature-rich over time.

Room divider
Color: Black, Color: Black
It was much simpler than anticipated. I don't think it's very sturdy and it lacks weight, but it's attractive.

Great room divider
Color: Black, Size: 4 Panel-88'', Color: Black, Size: 4 Panel-88''
This is a room divider and would work great as one! I’m using it as a cover for my car port/garage so you can’t look in and see my messy garage as easily and for what I’m using it for it’s a little not quite as sturdy as I need it to but I’m sure it’s not meant to be used outside anyways so I don’t fault the product since I’m not using it as intended… with that said though…. It still covers my garage beautifully and really does exactly what a I need it to! I’m sure the wind may blow it over if it gets too crazy but I don’t see it breaking by any means. The frame is metal and drilled together using long screws. It’s very well built. The cloth for the panels is this waterproof type material that’s kind of like the gazebo roof feeling. So it’s easy to clean and it’s easy to wipe. You can put it straight or bend the panels and either way it still stands up. You don’t HAVE to bend it to make it stand or anything. You can literally use it straight across like I am in the pictures. Overall very happy with this product and it’s also very tall so it truly covers a lot (hides a lot lol). I’m 5’8 so you can see it’s taller than me by the pic I took

OK. Drag to setup. Needs more stable feet
Color: Black, Size: 4 Panel-88''
I was glad to find these. The benefits of having them in a recording setup is helping suppressing noise for a vocal booth. It's a layer that surrounds the recording box. Nice! (But away from audio hardware or DAW). Here is the not so nice part: The feet! It's able to stand (as it needs to do this). But it cannot be bumped. If it does, it's coming down onto something. I believe the feet units are not wide enough (or long enough). That makes for an easier tumble risk. So far, they haven't, but it's like being in the woods over leaves - it feels dangerous with every step! (That's actually true). They are tall enough, wide enough, material OK. But the feet for the main assembly do not seem sturdy enough. There are ways to help that. I'm thinking a 2x4 to augment the base. Make them wider. It can be done. It was a drag to set these up, and I'm sure to modify them like i'd want them. But, they do come in at a much lower price that other similar dividers. Consider all this because I've seen more solid dividers ( with padding) that would basically be the 1/2 cost of these. But i'd think they'd be easier to assemble, stand sturdier, and without that feeling of an impending fall (or fail). This is my opinion. I hope it helps.

wrong size of metal components. incorrect items. non functioning
Color: Black, Size: 4 Panel-88''
The owner of this product sent me the incorrect pieces when I tried to install. It didn’t fit. The pieces were missing holes and once I connected the wrong pieces after knowing now they’re stuck and I can’t return them even though Amazon was kind enough to refund me. I just want to warn people this product is such a disappointment because it looks good. It’s good price, but you can’t even assemble the thing very disappointed.
