Description

Epigenetics

Epigenetics is the most exciting field in biology today, developing our understanding of how and why we inherit certain traits, develop diseases and age, and evolve as a species.

Genetics

"Introducing Genetics" takes readers on a journey through this new science to the discovery of DNA and the heart of the human gene map. In everyday life, many of us increasingly have to make moral decisions where genetics plays a part. This book gives us the information to do so.

Infinity

Infinity is a profoundly counter-intuitive and brain-twisting subject that has inspired some great thinkers – and provoked and shocked others. The ancient Greeks were so horrified by the implications of an endless number that they drowned the man who gave away the secret. And a German mathematician was driven mad by the repercussions of his discovery of transfinite numbers. Brian Clegg and Oliver Pugh’s brilliant graphic tour of infinity features a cast of characters ranging from Archimedes and Pythagoras to al-Khwarizmi, Fibonacci, Galileo, Newton, Leibniz, Cantor, Venn, Gödel and Mandelbrot, and shows how infinity has challenged the finest minds of science and mathematics. Prepare to enter a world of paradox.

Relativity

It is now more than a century since Einstein's theories of Special and General Relativity began to revolutionise our view of the universe. Beginning near the speed of light and proceeding to explorations of space-time and curved spaces, "Introducing Relativity" plots a visually accessible course through the thought experiments that have given shape to contemporary physics. Scientists from Newton to Hawking add their unique contributions to this story, as we encounter Einstein's astounding vision of gravity as the curvature of space-time and arrive at the breathtakingly beautiful field equations. Einstein's legacy is reviewed in the most advanced frontiers of physics today - black holes, gravitational waves, the accelerating universe and string theory. This is a superlative, fascinating graphic account of Einstein's strange world and how his legacy has been built upon since.

Evolution

In 1859, Charles Darwin shocked the world with a radical theory - evolution by natural selection. One hundred and fifty years later, his theory still challenges some of our most precious beliefs. Introducing Evolution provides a step-by-step guide to 'Darwin's dangerous idea' and takes a fresh look at the often misunderstood concepts of natural selection and the selfish gene. Drawing on the latest findings from genetics, ecology and animal behaviour- as well as the work of best-selling science writers such as Richard Dawkins and Steven Pinker- this book reveals how the evidence in favour of evolutionary theory is stronger than ever.

Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking is the world-famous physicist with a cameo in "The Simpsons on his CV", but outside his academic field his work is little understood. To the public he is a tragic figure - a brilliant scientist and author of the 9 million-copy-selling "A Brief History of Time", and yet confined to a wheelchair and almost completely paralysed. Hawking's major contribution to science has been to integrate the two great theories of 20th-century physics - Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. J.P. McEvoy and Oscar Zarate's brilliant graphic guide explores Hawking's life, the evolution of his work from his days as a student, and his breathtaking discoveries about where these fundamental laws break down or overlap, such as on the edge of a Black Hole or at the origin of the Universe itself.

Empiricism

Our knowledge comes primarily from experience. But is experience really what it seems? Is it reliable? Empiricist philosophers accept a 'commonsense' view of the phenomena we observe and yet conclude that all we can ever know are 'ideas'. Physical reality may not exist at all! The experimental breakthroughs of Kepler, Galileo and Newton - a radical new outlook in 17th-century science - informed this great British tradition in philosophy. Introducing Empiricism outlines the arguments of Locke, Berkeley, Hume, J.S. Mill, Bertrand Russell, and the last British empiricist, A.J. Ayer. It also looks at criticisms of empiricism in the work of Kant, Wittgenstein, Karl Popper and others.

Kant

Every subsequent major philosopher owes a profound debt to Kant?s attempts to delimit human reason as an appropriate object of philosophical enquiry. And yet, Kant's relentless systematic formalism made him a controversial figure in the history of the philosophy that he helped to shape. Introducing Kant focuses on the three critiques of Pure Reason, Practical Reason and Judgement. It describes Kant's main formal concepts: the relation of mind to sensory experience, the question of freedom and the law and, above all, the revaluation of metaphysics. Kant emerges as a diehard rationalist yet also a Romantic, deeply committed to the power of the sublime to transform experience. The book explores the paradoxical nature of his ideas and explains the reasons for his undiminished importance in contemporary philosophical debates.

Jack Morgan has stolen my heart!
Format: Kindle
If you know me, then you know one of my absolute favorite series is the Seattle Scorpions. When I heard we were going to be getting a new series, and that Jack Morgan would be the star of book1, I was so excited. Well let me tell you, Ruth herself delivered in every single aspect, did not hold back, and made me fall so in love with the New York Blades. There's nothing like a King who is obsessed, worships the ground she walk on, loves with all of his heart and I am so feral for him. From the beginning the chemistry was on point between Jack & Kendra, their connection, the banter and sass was just so delicious and beautiful and I couldn't get enough. I just absolutely loved everything that they are, from the way that Jack was so down bad for her but also still raw and vulnerable from his family traumas to the way that Kendra is this fiery, fierce, independent queen, but she's also raw and passionate and vulnerable and beautiful. After her last relationship, she's numb, used to not being treated like she matters, and it's through the love, patience and treatment that Jack gives her that she learns to open up her heart and find her true place. Together they are so beautiful and bold and I am obsessed with them. The spice is also spicing, its hot and raw and steamy and everything and more. Plus, just as is with these teams, the banter and chemistry of the players is on fire. We meet many of Jack's teammates and let me tell you, I already know based of the jokes, the banter and the level of sass that I am going to absolutely love them. We also get some cameos from our favorite Scorpions, and the found family in them makes my heart melt. I can not tell you how much I love Ruth's stories, these characters are so beautiful and funny and have so much depth and passion and I cannot get enough of them!! I can not wait to see what's next for the New York Blades!!

this book is totally worth picking up!
Format: Kindle
Perfect Deke was such a fantastic surprise! I didn’t know what to expect going in, but Ruth Stilling absolutely delivered a fun, emotional, and swoon-worthy ride. From the very first chapter, I was hooked. The characters, the chemistry, and the blend of humor and heart had me coming back for more. Deke is everything you want in a book boyfriend—charming, protective, and a little bit rough around the edges. But what really stood out to me was how multi-dimensional he was. Sure, he has that tough exterior, but there’s a lot more going on underneath, and I loved peeling back those layers. And let’s not forget the heroine—she was smart, strong, and had a fire to her that I really admired. The dynamic between them was electric, with that perfect mix of banter and deeper emotional connection. The plot was full of twists and turns, and the romance built up so nicely without feeling rushed. There were moments of tension, but also a lot of lightheartedness that made it such an enjoyable read. I appreciated how the author balanced those heavier moments with some real laugh-out-loud scenes, which gave the book a great flow. Perfect Deke really had it all—great characters, chemistry, and a plot that kept me turning the pages. It’s definitely a strong start to the Blade Kings series, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes next. If you're into swoon-worthy romances with a mix of humor, heart, and some spicy moments, this book is totally worth picking up! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)

good spice, poor banter
Format: Kindle
This definitely scratches the itch, but doesn’t offer a ton in terms of plot. The conflict that arises towards the end is weak at best, so if you are a fan of no third act breakup, this could be a good fit. He never really reads as British, but maybe the audio book would be a better option, if an accent does it for you.

oh my stars was this book everything i wanted and more!
Format: Kindle
The book follows Kendra Hart, an American soccer player, who is in a relationship with Tyler (who cares what his last name is he sucks). But they break up and Tyler isn’t happy about that (because he sucks). That’s when our favorite man, Jack Morgan, can sweep in and fake date her to help her get Tyler off his back. Here’s the drama though, Tyler and Jack used to be rivals in college and now they play for the same NHL team. Jack has had a secret crush on Kendra for years and he doesn’t plan to keep their relationship fake!! Kendra is just one of my favorite FMCs to date! throughout the whole book she is nothing but loyal and compassionate to all the people around her and she has no idea that her jack wang ex boyfriend was actually the worst until Jack! Jack who has cared about her for years and wants to do everything to help her see how she should be loved! the parking lot comment killed me and i felt like a true ache in my chest! and the third act moment i wish we got to see the rest of the context of the texts because i was just as shocked as Kendra (props to Ruth’s writing!! i was literally gobsmacked) but Jack explains it so no issue there really! the spice was perfect! literally all around i found this book to be amazing! I think each and every one of Ruth’s books have gotten better and better and that makes me so excited because this book kind of set up the next 2 in the series and i am ON MY KNEEEEESSS PRAYING for a Darcy and Archer book! i love the long term commitment girl with the playboy! its such a fun trope and Liam has been known to make Darcy cry, feel like she’s too much, he kinda monopolizes her time, and reminds me of Elliot who I also hope Darcy gets away from! i’m also excited to see the tropes of the next book because he’s a single dad and she floats around for work but she works in motorcycle shops so i’m not sure if a nanny trope will be there (this is assuming the next book is about Colin which i hope it is!!) Thank you so much to Ruth Stilling and her team for allowing me to read this ARC! I had the best time reading it! :)

A great hockey romance
Format: Kindle
This was a great hockey romance. Jake is a rookie NHL player who has secretly liked Kendra, a pro soccer star, since college. Kendra ends up without a place to live, so Jake steps in to help. He moves her in. They try to keep it inconspicuous to deter her ex and the team vibe. When her ex, Jake's teammate and rival, won’t leave her alone, Jake steps in to fake date her. I loved how much Jake adores Kendra. He’s supportive, protective, and says the sweetest things to her. Kendra is tough and confident, but you also see her softer side with Jake. Their friendship is strong before anything romantic happens, which makes their connection feel real. The fake dating, forced proximity, and “he falls first” tropes are done really well. There are lots of swoony moments, fun banter, and just enough drama to keep things interesting.
