But Odette isn't allowed to travel to the US together with her husband but is shipped instead to the Philip Morris Camp in Le Havre for induction and training in being 'American' before boarding the MS Vulcania for the trip to the States with some of the many other War Brides. Fast forward to the start of the book where Odette's great niece Maud and her husband Julien (our author) are preparing to embark on their own trip from Paris to Michigan to meet up with Odette and the many culture shocks that await them.
