I looked for a good cover for David Bowie’s ‘China Girl’ for a long time. There are lots of pulp covers that feature Chinese or Asian temptresses, but they all suffered from Orientalism and objectification, and I’m not having any of that.

This vintage retro pulp paperback cover was perfect, though (artist unknown to me). Not only does it depict a clearly balanced loving relationship between male and female, but ALSO the male was tall and blonde like Bowie! A little photoshop to introduce heterochromia and it was bang on.

I also learned that the song was originally co-written by Bowie and Iggy Pop in the 70s, and, even more fun, the residuals from Bowie’s solo re-release of the song in the early 80s continue to be enough to give Iggy Pop complete financial independence to this day.
