Upgrade your Lenovo data center with the Lenovo AMD EPYC 7002 (2nd Gen) 7642 processor — a powerhouse designed for dense, multi-threaded workloads. This 48-core, 96-thread monster from the EPYC 7002 family delivers exceptional parallel processing, making it ideal for virtualization, database management, analytics, and HPC workloads across enterprise Lenovo server environments. Built on AMD’s Zen 2 architecture, the 7642 combines high core density with strong instruction throughput, enabling you to consolidate workloads, accelerate batch processing, and scale your infrastructure with confidence. With a generous 256 MB L3 cache, 225 W thermal design power, 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, and support for 8-channel DDR4 memory, this upgrade path is engineered to maximize throughput while preserving Lenovo’s reliability and service ecosystem. The Socket SP3 platform ensures compatibility with a wide range of Lenovo server motherboards designed for EPYC 7002, delivering a straightforward upgrade that minimizes downtime while boosting performance for mission-critical applications. Whether you’re refreshing an aging server or building a new compute-heavy cluster, the 7642 provides the robust performance, security features, and scalability required by modern data centers.

  • The core strength you need for modern data centers: 48 physical cores and 96 threads deliver extraordinary parallel processing power, enabling heavy virtualization, large-scale databases, real-time analytics, and multi-tenant cloud workloads to run simultaneously with fewer bottlenecks. With this many cores, Lenovo servers can consolidate workloads that used to require multiple machines, improving overall efficiency and reducing capex and opex over time.
  • Blazing performance with balanced frequencies: a base clock of 2.30 GHz paired with a boost clock up to 3.30 GHz provides strong per-core performance for latency-sensitive tasks while maintaining high multithreaded throughput. The 7642 is designed to sustain impressive turbo performance across sustained workloads, helping applications respond quickly under load and improving throughput in multi-user, multi-VM environments.
  • Massive memory and I/O capability for data-centric workloads: 256 MB of L3 cache minimizes latency for memory-intensive tasks, while 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, paired with 8-channel DDR4 memory support, deliver ample bandwidth for fast storage, GPUs, accelerators, and network interfaces. This combination is ideal for large databases, in-memory analytics, and server virtualization that require high memory bandwidth and rapid I/O access.
  • Reliability, security, and enterprise readiness: designed for Lenovo/EPYC server ecosystems, this upgrade emphasizes stability, firmware compatibility, and vendor support. The 225 W TDP is matched by sophisticated thermal and power management, helping ensure consistent performance even under heavy workloads. Security features at the silicon level and robust error-correcting capabilities underpin data integrity in demanding environments.
  • Elegant upgrade path for Lenovo customers: the SP3 socket enables broad compatibility with Lenovo ThinkSystem and other EPYC 7002-capable server boards. This upgrade preserves Lenovo’s enterprise-grade reliability and service quality while unlocking modern compute density, better virtualization density, and improved total cost of ownership for data centers that demand sustained performance across their workloads.

How to install Lenovo AMD EPYC 7002 (2nd Gen) 7642

  • Before you begin, verify motherboard compatibility: ensure your Lenovo server motherboard supports Socket SP3 and the EPYC 7002 family, and check BIOS/firmware compatibility for the 7642
  • Power down the system and follow proper static-safe handling procedures to protect both the CPU and server components
  • Open the chassis and locate the CPU socket; lift the socket lever and align the 7642 with the alignment notches to ensure correct orientation
  • Gently place the processor into the SP3 socket and secure the lever, ensuring even seating without excessive force
  • Apply a thin, even layer of high-quality thermal interface material (TIM) if the heatsink requires it, then mount the appropriate server-grade heatsink or cooling solution rated for 225 W TDP
  • Reconnect power and firmware devices, update the BIOS/firmware to the latest version, and enable EPYC 7002 support in the system firmware if required
  • Power on and perform a POST to confirm the CPU is recognized; run a memory and CPU stress test to validate stability and thermals under load
  • Monitor temperatures and energy usage during initial deployment; adjust cooling, fan profiles, and power management settings as needed to maintain stable operation in your data center

Frequently asked questions

  • Q: Is this CPU compatible with my Lenovo server? A: Compatibility depends on the motherboard supporting Socket SP3 and a BIOS/firmware version that recognizes the EPYC 7002 family. Consult Lenovo’s compatibility matrix for your specific model and verify the server’s BIOS is up to date before installation.
  • Q: What is the target workload for the AMD EPYC 7642? A: The 7642 is optimized for multi-threaded, compute-heavy tasks such as virtualization environments, large-scale databases, analytics, HPC workloads, and dense containerized deployments. It excels in scenarios requiring high core counts and memory bandwidth.
  • Q: Can I overclock this processor? A: EPYC server processors are typically designed for reliability and steady performance rather than consumer-grade overclocking. While the product description lists a 3.30 GHz boost frequency, overclocking beyond rated specifications is not generally supported in enterprise servers. Ensure cooling and firmware support align with your deployment requirements.
  • Q: How much memory can I attach to a system with this CPU? A: The EPYC 7642 supports multi-channel memory configurations across eight channels per socket, enabling substantial memory bandwidth and capacity, which is ideal for data-intensive workloads and large-scale virtualization.
  • Q: What advantages does this upgrade offer for Lenovo customers? A: Upgrading to the 7642 delivers dramatic multi-core throughput, strong single-thread performance, ample PCIe 4.0 I/O bandwidth, and improved memory access. This combination accelerates critical workloads, reduces overall server footprint, and preserves Lenovo’s enterprise-grade reliability and support ecosystem.

Great design for a kitchen sink organizer -- will not tip or accumulate water
We've had an Oxo kitchen sink organizer for years, and it's been fine, except 1) tall brushes (for example, Oxo brushes) make it tippy, stray elbows or imperfect placement of the brush would knock it into the sink and 2) it built up a soapy sludge in the bottom that that had to be drained and wiped down constantly. This item solves both issues perfectly. Likes: Size - I think it's about 5 inches deep, which is just right to fit the strip of countertop that runs behind the sink, up against the backsplash Weight - The drying stone in the bottom gives the baskets some real heft, so there is no tipping it over by bumping a brush handle -- it really stays put Drying stone -- The diatomaceous drying stone that slides into the bottom of the main basket is a great idea. These are porous stones that will absorb water and then allow it to evaporate fairly quickly. So far, it seems to be doing its job well. I'm sure the stone will need a wipe down now and then to stay clean, but no puddles of sludgy soapy water in the bottom is a big plus Overall Design/Build quality -- The unit seems solid. It's a simple design, but there are no sharp edges or unfinished bits. Once in place it doesn't wobble a bit. I wasn't sure about the black powder-coated finish, but installed it looks clean and it's unobtrusive. I appreciate that the smaller basket for tall brushes sits on hooks and can be hung inside or outside the main basket. Ours sits inside, but there's plenty of room left over for sponges . And there's still room to stand up a bottle of liquid detergent or counter-top spray. NOT SO LIKES Nothing so far. I notice a lot of this style of sink organizer on Amazon, so presumably they're selling well. It's a great improvement over the older kinds. Five big, clean, well-organized stars. Highly recommended.
