how to install Allied Telesis x220-52GT Ethernet Switch

Installing the x220-52GT is streamlined for environments that demand quick deployment and reliable operation at the edge. Begin by planning your fiber topology to maximize coverage and minimize latency between the edge devices and the core. Confirm power availability and ensure proper rack space with adequate ventilation to maintain optimal operating temperatures. Once physically installed, follow these steps to bring the switch online and configure it for secure, scalable operation:

1) Rack and connect: Mount the switch in a standard equipment rack. Connect the device to a reliable power source using the appropriate power cable. Verify that the environment supports proper airflow and that cooling infrastructure is in place to prevent overheating during peak traffic periods.

2) Cable provisioning: Route fiber optic cables to the 24 SFP slots and four uplink ports. Use appropriate fiber types (as specified for your AFM-enabled configuration) and ensure connectors are clean and free of dust. Maintain clean, strain-relieved cabling to reduce mechanical wear and improve link reliability over time.

3) Network addressing: Assign an IP address or rely on your existing DHCP infrastructure to provision management access. Prepare a management subnet that is separate from data traffic when possible to enhance security and reduce broadcast noise on the control plane.

4) Access methods: Log into the switch using the preferred management interface—web-based GUI or command-line interface (CLI). Ensure you have the latest firmware or software image provided by Allied Telesis and apply any recommended baseline configuration for security and performance.

5) Basic configuration: Configure VLANs to segment traffic appropriately, define trunking on uplinks, and set up any required QoS policies to prioritize critical services. Enable AFM monitoring to continuously evaluate fiber health and automatically alert administrators or take protective actions if anomalies are detected.

6) Security hardening: Implement recommended security measures such as strong administrator credentials, access control lists (ACLs) for sensitive ports, and secure management access (TLS for GUI/SSH for CLI). Regularly review event logs and AFM alerts to maintain protection against potential threats.

7) Verification: Validate port identities and link status for all fiber ports. Confirm AFM is reporting healthy fiber states and that the uplinks are correctly integrated with the core network. Perform baseline throughput tests to ensure the edge performance meets your design specifications.

8) Documentation and monitoring: Document the final configuration, including VLAN assignments, AFM settings, and security policies. Set up ongoing monitoring using the switch’s management capabilities and integrate AFM alerts into your network operations center (NOC) for proactive maintenance and rapid incident response.

When installing at scale, consider staging multiple switches in a lab environment to validate fiber paths and AFM behavior prior to deployment. This approach minimizes disruption and helps ensure a smooth rollout across your distributed sites, campuses, and edge locations. The x220-52GT’s fiber-centric architecture is designed to simplify expansion; as your edge network grows, you can incrementally add more SFP-based connections or extend uplinks while preserving centralized management and consistent security posture.

For best results, consult Allied Telesis documentation and support resources for model-specific configuration steps, firmware advisories, and AFM guidance. While the core functionality focuses on delivering secure, fiber-rich edge connectivity, keeping firmware up-to-date and adhering to vendor-recommended security practices will maximize reliability and protect critical traffic across your distributed network.

Natural tan /no orangy hands!
Mine came with the lotion, applicator mitt, and a facial can mist. I haven't used the facial mist yet but here are my observations for the lotion: PROS - finish color looked very natural. Not orange at all. - no streaks / dark patches / missed spots (of course this has to do with the application as much as the product) - can build darker tan with multiple applications - did not transfer onto my clothing - the "self-tan lotion"scent was present but not terrible CONS - slight self tanner smell - made my scars look darker (not a product defect, my scars get darker from the sun too. Just mentioning in case someone has severe scarring /discoloration/ vitiligo to be mindful. First application I would say do full body. And maybe afterward learn to work around your darker skin spots. I didn't use the mitt for application, but it's nice and soft and comfortable. I used disposable cheapy medical gloves because I felt like I may not get good enough control and might leave streaks with the mitt. (With practice though, I will definitely use it because it feels nice and soft.)

Works great
Color: Medium Glow
This works great and darkens skin to a beautiful light tan but does somewhat wash off the next day so it does require reapplying the next day. I would purchase this again.

A good starter kit
A really good starter kit, the tan isn’t orangey and applies pretty easily. It doesn’t get super dark. The lotion is good to make the tan last longer but wash your hands really well or they’ll have dark splotches. The spray isn’t amazing and can look streaky

Works good
Color: Medium Glow
It smells like tropical scent after putting it on. The smell lingers for about an hour or two. It is not bad though, I like it- reminds me of summer scent. Instant tan works very quick. I am very fair I see no sun so, I put two layers on yesterday and two layers on today. I am significantly tanner. I only use my hands to spread it in, it would work better with less streaks if using a tool to help spread the product evenly. It leaves my skin feeling very smooth and hydrated and I like the color and scent, I like how it has hydrolaunic acid and vitamin c. Works good and stays on. I was able to convince my husband it was good to have because of the hydrolaunic acid and the vitamin c, I said it's a 3-in-1! I also bought this during black Friday week so, got it for a good price.

Quick drying, non sticky lotion!
Color: Medium Glow
Great even color and dries immediately. This formula is not sticky at all. The color may not be as dark as the gel or foam, but is very natural.
