One part Nietzsche, one part Humbert Humbert, and a soupcon of Milton’s Lucifer,  Axel Vander, the dizzyingly unreliable narrator of John Banville’s masterful new novel, is the bearer of a fearsome reputation as a literary dandy and bully.
