On par with the better Collin-Mezin violins in terms of sound and quality of making (but at a fraction of the price), this French violin from one of the Mirecourt workshops dates from approximately 1890, and would suit an advanced player seeking to progress to something which offers versatility of tone with a clean and immediate response. The violin bears a label attributing it to the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, a skilled maker and gifted impresario based in Paris during the middle decades of the 19th century, whose instruments and business acumen catapulted him to comparative stardom (within the world of lutherie). Consequently many makers and workshops endeavoured to align themselves with his atelier, hence the appearance of Vuillaume labels in other instruments from other regions later in the century.
